IMO when you look at the decisions the NCAA is making these days I barely trust them to run a day care, let alone a multi-billion dollar enterprise.

I thought one of the ideas an ESPN correspondent had was pretty good idea. Basically it was to have people at the school players can talk to when they need cash. These people would help them look at things like getting a cheaper cellphone plan, or if they need a tat right now or can save for it for a month etc. etc. The school would have money put aside for hardships, and after the player goes through that and still they don't have enough, then the hardship money can be given to them.

Re: Should College Athletes Get Paid?
Why do they need money GIVEN to them? Apply for scholarships and loans... get loans... live off that.
I had to take out loans for all my living expenses. My apartment, my food and my car and I had it paid off a little more than 6 months after graduating. I'm sure anyone making a professional career out of their sport will have it all paid off when their signing bonus comes in... Anyone else, get a real job like the rest of the world and pay off your loan the old fashion way.
I don't get this. Why would individuals taking out loans getting better rates or larger sums of money be any different than what happens right now?

Re: Should College Athletes Get Paid?
taking out more loans, the American way!
so lets get this straight we expect college atheltes to take out more loans and pay out of state tuition ( because most do) in hopes of being the 1% that make it to the nfl? OR they can 'get a job like everyone else' because there main focus in school was education right? what do you think half these guys major in? Where is smokensherrif when you need him.
this is a joke

How did LeBron James have a Hummer at 18? How did Florida State get known as Free Shoes U? How did the guys at OU get jobs as janitors at car dealerships paying $20 per hour, and then have someone else clocking in and out for them? When an athlete is involved then somehow magically no becomes yes. I would rather it be handled above board, and equally fair for all parties, then by some shady hanger-on.
As for getting loans I have no issue with it, but like Hocus said it has to be based on ability to repay now, and if an athlete gets preferential treatment just because they are an athlete then that is an NCAA violation, yet again.

Who is at fault if the Athlete studies a bad subject and gets a worthless degree?
It's not my problem if Joe Football player choose Liberal Arts over Engineering...
Are you really arguing with me that football players shouldn't focus on getting a real education that will be viable when their career winds up going nowhere?
