Re: Should College Athletes Get Paid?
I know Blah got a full ride to a fairly prestigious school because of his athleticism. Maybe he can stop by and shed some light on how he is making good on his opportunity to get an amazing degree for free, while maintaining his physical ability to perform for the school.

This is about a year old, but sums up some of my points pretty well.

Oh, and IMO college football is different than any other college sport. It is much more demanding in terms of time requirements, and is much more lucrative for the universities. The only college sport that even comes close is basketball.

Re: Should College Athletes Get Paid?
the problem quicklighting is what they are doing is actually an extremely valuable service to the university....100x more profitable to the school than the guy getting his engineering degree. you arent considering the economics behind this.
the college athletes make the university far more money than any other student, and because of that, why dont they get a cut? in fact, they are the only type of student that directly makes the university external money. no other student does that on campus.
a genius student gets a full scholarship to a school yes, but he doesnt make the school any money like an athlete. the athlete should get the full scholarship because they are as talented as an academic student just in a different way, PLUS they actually give the school a tangible return.
if the schools would stop taking 50 million dollars of ad revenue from ESPN FOX etc then I wouldnt be for them getting paid, but its crazy how they dont get anything for their work.
im sure if some engineering student invented something that gave the university 50 million dollars he would ask for a lot more than a scholarship. he would ask for a cut of the invention money, and would you deny him that?

Re: Should College Athletes Get Paid?
Thats the problem though
fixed that for you
Financially, it costs universities very little to fund a student, case in point of this is the scraps of change most university students make it by with. Books, food, shelter, and salary for the teachers.
profitable only because society values entertainment more than they do services deemed as necessities. That is to say, people dont value a cure for cancer, until they have cancer. The one thing society shares in common, is boredom; boredom is treated by entertainment. Thus the overwhelmingly lopsided values.
Honestly, taking a step in the right direction, is to lessen the heavy priority placed on entertainment and balance the scales a bit, in regards to value on scientific advancement. As it stands, most of society expects others to do the advancing, rather than partaking in the quest themselves. Society is the problem, long and dreary road ahead to try and correct things, best way to start, is to stop making sports such a valuable and desirable profession for children to aspire to be, we need more scientist, not bloaks who can through a ball.

Re: Should College Athletes Get Paid?
Were you frequently picked last for kick ball? =D j/k
I can see your point, but when you grow up with very little, you start to value a better lifestyle as you grow older. And so as individuals we want to make $$$ to attain that lifestyle. The best way to make money is to become very talented at what will get a job earning the most money.
You are worth what the market will pay you, and if the market wants to be entertained and will pay millions and billions to do so, then there will be kids willing to take those spots to get a piece of the pie.
I know you won't agree with me, but collegiate sports do bring in a shit ton of money to Universities, especially if your university's team is very good.

Re: Should College Athletes Get Paid?
touche lol, nah i wasnt the last nor was i the first. But then again i never took much gym (a year in middle school, and a year in highschool i think) and hanging out after school in the soccer field wasn't my thing... Im bitter because while Ive been accepted to my dream colleges many times, but i cant attend because I simply cannot afford it nor have I been able to get a scholarship, nor can i take out loans due to my financial history (health related).
Thats exactly both the problem and my point! Im not questioning what is, but how we got here, and how we can fix things. Why do athletes get paid so much? Entertainment? ya sure, but one can get entertained by a book, an arcade game, hobbies, outdoor activities, a prostitute, or the news channel.... I guess because its competitive but... really? No other ways to find entertainment?
More to the point, has anyone stopped to think that this direction we are heading (valuing entertainment so highly), is in the wrong direction? Its obvious that out society is the child of democracy: do what you want no tyrants; no one to make and enforce a choice that everyone needs but doesnt want. It really, reminds me of an adolescent, unable to lookout for themselves, eating candy until they throw-up, getting drunk and driving.... Everyone playing the part of the kid, we all are going after what we want without temperance and certainly no regard for the consequences. Cant help but draw the connection of the stages of adolescence to the society generated by America's structure of government. We all want free health care, but we need a parent to tell us that someone has to pay for it. We all want to sit around and induldge on television, but wheres the parent to tell us to turn of the TV and go outside or go study?
I suppose since we are the first society generated from such a government, we'll have to be the ones to learn the hard learned lesson and turn into the parents for the society of the future.... Shame, such a waste of valuable time...
huh, on a side note, I think I just found the topic for my thesis...Last edited by Bunni; 12-29-10 at 12:04 AM.

Re: Should College Athletes Get Paid?
yeh but now the topic has changed from whether college athletes deserve a cut of the payday to whether athletics in general deserves the money it gets.
the romans built the coliseum to watch gladiators fight for entertainment, we build stadiums 2000 yrs later to watch a more modern version of essentially the same type of activity. whether its worthy of what we pay is an interesting philosophical debate, but economically the question has clearly been answered the same way it was 2000 yrs ago. humans will pay, a lot, to watch other humans play a sport against each other.

12-29-10, 09:46 AM #50It's not just athletes. TV and movie stars, musicians, heck even the good strippers make more than many educated accountants and similar professions. People will get paid what the market will bear. When people stop tuning in prices start going down, and so do salaries.
