Should College Athletes Get Paid?

So in lieu of the Newton thread winding down the path of whether or not college athletes should be paid, I figured a new thread may be in order.

With all that they get to do already hell no. Most of these guys get free rides anyways. They get free advertising and if they are good enough they get massive contracts without even stepping foot on a NFL field. These guys should all be thanking the colleges not asking for money from them. It's a joke to begin with since the reason for going to a college is for an education.

If the reason is to get an education then why have sports at all? The college is in it to make a buck off of the athletes, so why shouldn't they get paid too? I support a small stipend, like $100 per week. And Rock, if you seriously think they only play/practice 6 months out of the year you are delusional. One of my best friends ran track an A&M, and even for a secondary sport like track it is a year round job.

I'd rather they be allowed to have part-time jobs (like every other student on campus) but if NCAA rules are going to be so crazy you have to worry about getting suspended just for having a damn job, then a small stipend would be okay. $100 would seem fine, thats about the same as what you'd make working 20 hours at minimum wage (well a bit less but still its plenty of money considering everything else is free).

I would have to agree with Lizard on this one. Its ridiculous that the NCAA expects some of these athletes to go play for a school and the school makes a shit ton of money off of their talents, but they dont see a dime of it. Give them a monthly wage by the school or allow them to have some kind of job during the school year.

Wouldn't that fall under scholarship that's quite a few dimes.

i suppose. but the scholarships dont provide for any living expenses. You get yoru tuition, room and board and books paid for. Everything else comes out of your pocket.

oh and when i say living expenses, i should say "fun money." Quite literally you have zero money to do anything. If you want to go check out a movie or something like that you cant, unless your parents or family are giving you the money.

iirc, the correct term would be disposable income
