Italian scientists claim to have demonstrated cold fusion

PhysOrg Mobile: Italian scientists claim to have demonstrated cold fusion (w/ Video)
Their application for a patent was rejected, and the data was rejected through the peer review process- yet they claim to have a working unit that has been heating a factory for 2 years.
"Rossi and Focardi say that, when the atomic nuclei of nickel and hydrogen are fused in their reactor, the reaction produces copper and a large amount of energy. The reactor uses less than 1 gram of hydrogen and starts with about 1,000 W of electricity, which is reduced to 400 W after a few minutes. Every minute, the reaction can convert 292 grams of 20°C water into dry steam at about 101°C. Since raising the temperature of water by 80°C and converting it to steam requires about 12,400 W of power, the experiment provides a power gain of 12,400/400 = 31. As for costs, the scientists estimate that electricity can be generated at a cost of less than 1 cent/kWh, which is significantly less than coal or natural gas plants."
This is prob all BS but wouldn't it be something if it were true. I would love to give my utility company the middle finger!

Re: Italian scientists claim to have demonstrated cold fusion

It would never "happen" in the sense that it would become used if only because of the massive amount of money that would be spent to keep the technology under wraps, way too much money in energy for it to become dirt cheap. It is documented fact that gasoline giants paid money to muck up the electric car industry, Nevada casino's pour money into efforts to make internet and Indian casinos illegal. Then you have academic snobbery, the only example I can think of is the anthropologist who did a tissue sample on an Egyptian mummy and found cocaine. She posted her find in a journal and was basically ex-communicated from her profession because cocaine is only found in South America hence she was a fraud. She was vindicated a few years after by another independent lab that found the same result.

Cold Fusion Is Hot Again - 60 Minutes - CBS News

This is old news, but it could shed some light on what these scientist have been trying to perfect over the past couple years. If and only if they can demonstrate this in an experiment with 95%+ success will their claims ever be legitimatized. If they do have a unit that has been working for 2 years (as claimed) this should be no problem…time will tell on this one. It is encouraging to see that some experiments have yielded more heat energy than what was put into the system; they just have to re-evaluate their experiments to find consistency. From what I have read, this is not at all out of the realm of possibility.

..."there are only three main ingredients. First, there is palladium, a metal in the platinum family. Second, one needs a kind of hydrogen called deuterium which is found in seawater. Deuterium is essentially unlimited. There is ten times as much energy in a gallon of sea water, from the deuterium contained within it, than there is in a gallon of gasoline," he explained. The palladium is placed in water containing deuterium and the third ingredient is an electric current. The experiment is wrapped in insulation and instruments. They're looking for what they call "excess heat." In other words, is more energy coming out than the electric current puts in?"...
..."No one's sure why the experiments can't be consistently reproduced. McKubre thinks it has something to do with how the palladium is prepared. He's working with an Italian government lab called ENEA where some of the most reliable palladium is made."...

In case anyone was wondering how the two claims/experiments are similar...( I am sure you are all dieing to know

Palladium belongs to Group 10 in the periodic table:

    Z (atomic number) /Element/ No. of electrons/shell
    28 nickel 2, 8, 16, 2
    46 palladium 2, 8, 18, 18
    78 platinum 2, 8, 18, 32, 17, 1
    110 darmstadtium 2, 8, 18, 32, 32, 17, 1

I voted "Full of Crap" even though I really wish it were true.
