Thread: your roof is leaking.

3 years ago.. i noticed a small leak commin through the ceiling, so i crawled up in the attic, found what i believed to be source of the leak, whipped out the trusty GE Silicone RTV and caulked he hell out of that leak....

Fast forward about 6 months, we get two days of rain with the occasional massive down pour when one night i notice the drip is back. So i placed a bucket in the drop zone and resigned my self that i would need to return to the attic, but tomorrow, i was in no mood to crawl my ass up there.

About 9:00pm that night the drip REALLY increased... and started very suddenly in two other places. As i grabbed additional buckets to place under the offending leaks, i looked up at the ceiling to see a 2' x 4' section of sheet rock and about 4 gallons of water come crashing to the floor! Damn good thing no one was standing under it when it dropped!

Once i could see the extent of the damage i got a little insight into the quality of work the last two remodelers that worked on the house. My house dates back to 1860 with a hodge podge of additions to make it bigger. The original ceiling was plaster and lath, then 3/8 furring strips were added to place those 50's style fiber tiles.... then a layer of 3/8 sheet rock. All hanging from rough cut 2 x 4 s 16" OC. The water had been dripping through the plaster, soaking into the fiber tiles then pooling above the sheet rock before finding a way out, a good 6 feet away from the origin of the water. But im finding that's how they do things out in the country... cover up the problem and the problem is gone!

Ended up replacing the roof and ceiling a lot sooner than i had hoped, but the good news it i gained 2" of ceiling height!
