Shotgun advice?

I looked at the 870, but heard, which I know is dangerous, that it wasn't the highest of quality in terms of internals.

I dunno about that. I have had 2 for over 20+ years and they both still work. Both had had 5000+ rounds through them. I am not sure about the new ones. Only recently, I have bought a Beretta 686 White Onyx Sporting for field birds and clays. That is an Over Under. I have held the Nova recently and it seemed clunky and loose. I have not shot it. My next general purpose will probably be the Extrma 2. I am waiting to take a look at the KelTec KSG. It will be some time for that to come out to the public though.

Do not believe what you hear about the 870. Is it a master of engineering perfection? No. Is it reliable, yes. I would say that there are more 870's sold by far than any other shotgun.

If I were hell bent on a pump I would buy a plain browning BPS with a 26" barrel. I love bottom ejection guns though.

Also just an FYI, while I am a huge fan of benelli and owner X2 the crio barrels suck ass. I just had the barrel bent on both my benelli's because they were not shooting on target. My 20ga was 2" low and 2" left at 15yrds which is way off. Once I had them "fixed" they both shoot well and they are highly dependable. I use benelli's because they have yet to fail me in the harshest conditions.

Just not a fan of the Nova at all. In all honesty it would be my last choice for a pump including the 870 which can be had for $200.

All that said, I doubt I would buy a pump but I already own one. It has not made its way out of the safe in 10 years. I exclusively dove, quail and snipe hunt with my 20ga M2 and duck hunt with my SBEII 12ga. Plenty of home defense upgrades for the M2.

Yes, the 870 is the most sold shotgun ever. Nuckle, is dead on. Pumps aren't my thing either. I am just speaking from past experience.

So one more question just to make sure we are all on the same page. Are you guys talking about the nova or the super nova being clunky, or both?

Both for me. It would be something I would get for my kid or something because I know they are going to bang it up. Everything on it just seemed loose. Shake it, there were a lot of loose parts on it on all the ones I held. Maybe they have improved them since then. I haven't held one in years so my comments my be invalid. If it fits for it might be a good place to start.

My biggest thing with a shotgun is that it has to "fit." Close your eyes and bring it up to your cheek. If it lines up and feels comfortable, it is a good fit. The Beretta was an awesome fit for me. I use sight picture so I don't really "aim." I use the same technique in my FPS that I play. Comes in very handy. I don't have to waste time zooming in or looking down the sights. I just know what it supposed to look like.

When I decided to purchase a home defense long gun, I chose the Remington 870.

I opted for a pump shotgun for two main reasons: the distinctive sound of a round being chambered, and my desire to have a reliable weapon that will strike fear into the heart of any sane human being. The sound of a pump shotgun being "pumped" is pretty much universally recognized, and most people believe that a shotgun will eviscerate them if pointed anywhere in their general direction. If a home invader doesn't flee the sound and then the sight of a pump shotgun, he must be crazy.

I chose the 870 partly because it is so popular, and there are, therefore, tons of aftermarket accessories you can buy for it (I immediately replaced the standard stock with a youth stock to shorten the draw and improve maneuverability in close quarters; there are now adjustable stocks for the 870 and other shotguns that are more versatile). I believe the Winchester 1300 also has a large number of aftermarket parts. I don't know how many aftermarket accessories are available for the Benelli.

As good as semi-auto shotguns may be now, I still like the idea of a pump. As long as you don't short stroke it, it will function as intended. And, hopefully, the sound it makes will be all the deterrent you'll ever need.

By the way, my 870 is strictly a home defense weapon. I use a Beretta AL 391 (semi-auto) for sporting clays.

I'm a Mossberg man myself. My father has had one longer than i've been alive. He's replaced the tube spring once.

I've held and tinkered with a benelli super nova. I liked the gun, but not the pump shield. It rattled right out of the box, but functioned fine.

I rolled old school for a long time though, with a bolt action Mossberg. That gun would do anything a pump could do, and never bound in the time I had it. It's to be said the particular model was nicknamed a "goose popper" by members of my family, because they used to use similar models when I was a kid to knock geese out of the sky far out of the ranged their dove guns could reach.
