Yes but this is the same as saying Bill Gates didn't invent anything first either (which is true, he took existing code and MARKETED IT). But I am sure when he dies, we will all be missing him as much or even more than Steve Jobs, since without him we'd all still be playing console games for one thing...

Re: RIP Steve Jobs
Gates has never, and likely will never, have the same rabid following as Jobs does. Also, I don't think anyone is saying that Jobs didn't invent anything. That's about as silly as saying Gates didn't either. It's all about perspective and reality. The grandiose claims of Jobs' influence as "....the most innovative...." or the "....most pioneering...." are just that. Grandiose and overly so.

Re: RIP Steve Jobs
Absolutely. It's widely known that Jobs and Gates BOTH went to see the Xerox Alto and Star systems. These were created in the EARLY 1970s LONG before the mac and windows. I mean... tell me this doesn't look like early mac OS...
And yeah... that's from 1974-ish.
It was also where they first saw the mouse. Both of them. BOTH of them were influenced by it and BOTH of them designed their own GUI OS' off of it. Saying that Gates ripped off MacOS is no more accurate than saying Jobs created the first GUI operating system and the mouse.
Jobs popularized both. Windows solidified it as an everyday thing. (And don't leave Tramiel out of the equation with the AmigaOS either which was the first desktop OS that was truly pre-emptive multitasking.)
There's a shitload of true pioneers out there that have been overshadowed by the Big Two. Those Big Two were just the most prominent and in-your-face pitch-men for their products. They were the face of their company and knew enough to surround themselves the the real pioneers and engineers that could put their visions (inspired, bought, stolen, or otherwise) to paper and create actual products from them.
Krakkens and shit. stop tempting them. -- Bigdog

Re: RIP Steve Jobs
My favorite sweater is a 8ish years old dark red with the Oregon trails logo on front.
I've never seen something as stupid in any post anywhere on these forums, even in a "why I got banned" thread, then starting an argument over how much credit an icon of personal technology deserves in death for his contribution. I'v never owned an apple computer but I likely would not own any computer if a handful of 'Steve Jobs' hadn't figured out how to produce one I can afford and make a buck doing it.
So thanks Steve.
Also,
Even on the low end of Steve's contribution I'd take that over Ghandi or Jesus as an improvement of life on earth. This machine kills fascists
