Re: Advice on buying a DSLR?
I dabble a bit in cameras and iv heard Canon is the way to go. I got a Nikon D40 its nice cause all of there lenses are standardized so if I want to upgrade/downgrade I can keep my lenses. If I go over to Canon all the lenses have the focusing mechanism in the lens instead of the camera body. They focus A LOT faster and Canon is supposed to be much better for sports/fast paced action shooting. Nikon is supposedly better for portraits and landscapes. When I upgrade my camera I think im going to go over to Canon and pick me up a nice rebel.
Remember the lens is almost as important as the body. You probably wont be happy with the (I assume) stock 18-55 lens. I got an off brand 18-200 lens thats pretty nice. Lets me zoom in REAL close and has a small minimum focus distance of 8 inches.

Re: Advice on buying a DSLR?
The lens is MUCH more important than the body for image quality......
(but a crappy body will be what you have to deal with to fiddle with settings)
I would recommend canon, as its my brand of choice (believe maximusBoomus also uses canon).
Looking at the T3 vs the T3i, I would definitly pay for the T3i......

the T3 is seriously gimped by comparison, but it is less expensive.
As far as that 18-55 kit lens, it is ok in my opinion. I would also recomend picking up a nifty 50 (50mm 1.8f) ASAP, it will be great for video and night time shots especially with the low f stop. It also offers much better image quality than the kit lens, although it is a prime and you will have to zoom with your feet.
Let me know if you have any questions.l-- Intentionally Left Blank --

Re: Advice on buying a DSLR?
The Fiance is interested in getting into photography. Her point and shoot just aint gonna cut it so I am thinking $475 ish isn't bad for an entry level but still not a low quality.
Yeah, i know the standard lens isn't much but I think it is a good place to start (especially since this is a surprise for her) Will worry about a better lens later for her birthday or something.
I kinda assumed that the cannon lens would be compatible with other cannon bodies later on but now I think I need to go research that.
I am just thankful she wont need a dark room like my step dad had 30 years ago.

Re: Advice on buying a DSLR?
I saw the 3Ti as the next step up. Assumed that means "better" but not sure investing another $150ish on a lark purchase makes the most sense. She has never had a nice REAL camera before I am worried about over whelming her with the controls.
Is the T3i more user friendly for a newb?
Everything I know about the difference between the 2

Re: Advice on buying a DSLR?
Also look at the T2i instead of the T3..... it is better than the T3i in some cases.
The difference between the two for me is, the higher trim models have more physical buttons.... what this means is once you learn what they do you can rely on them always working and being snappy and easy and quick to change. The lower trim models have the functions hidden under menus sometimes 2-4 levels deep. For me learning what a physical button does is easier than figuring out what a menu choice does when it takes me 2-4 clicks to get out of the menu to test it....
The Rebel bodies all use the EF-S lens mount. The EF-S lens mount can use both EF and EF-S lenses. But an EF-S lense cannot be used on a EF mount..... but those are generally only on the high end bodies.
Basically the T3 really sucks: Canon T3 vs T2iLast edited by rush2049; 12-15-11 at 03:01 PM.

Re: Advice on buying a DSLR?
Here this is a T2i with the kit lense that is used....
Used
(used camera equipment retains its value more than anything I know)
also buying used from large photography stores (B&H or Calumet) is just as good as new in my opinion.-- Intentionally Left Blank --

Re: Advice on buying a DSLR?
Okay the difference between the 3ti and 2ti seems minimal.
However either one is a significant price jump
SOoooo ....
Used Canon EOS Rebel T2i Digital SLR Kit w/ 4462B012AB B&H Photo
Referb but only $50 more than I was thinking anyway. hmmmm
