05-06-12, 09:39 AM #1Fed up with AMD
Crossfire is still crap for skyrim 7 months after release...will be getting a 690. Wish I had decided to go with 580x2 instead of going AMD. I spent the last 9 hours trying to get skyrim to work...trying once last ditch attempt, but this has been too much of a pain in the ass.
Just need to wait for a 690 to come out with more than a single HDMI port (and a mini at that).
You'd think that AMD was trying to lose customers.enf-Jesus its been like 12 minutes and you're already worried about stats?! :-P

Re: Fed up with AMD
Traditionally AMD/ATI has been less than quick about driver updates.
The 690 is very beastly... if you can afford one, nice.
Here is how powerful it is just you know (you might just consider a single 680 for now): My SLI 560ti's have a total of 758 CUDA cores. I can run Skyrim with all of the eye candy mods at maximum; I can also play BF3 at maximum except with AAx4 (I start getting a little mouse lag if it is higher). Again: 758 cores, the 680 has 1500 cores and the 690 has 3000. The 680 is like double my SLI setup.
Also, each 680 will have a HDMI port on it... two 680's cost as much as the 690. The sweet thing about the 690 is it's over engineered cooler (I wouldn't get a water block for it, research it's cooler; that's what makes it 1k instead of 750ish like it's predecessors).

Re: Fed up with AMD
I do have to say that nVidia images look more washed out. ATI seems to make a more colorful image.
A buddy and I sat around testing this one day. and to our eyes all his high end ATI cards had "better" image quality than my nVidia card sets... Jinxy and I used to debate this here in the HW forum and there is some literature on the internet about it too.
But the continual updates are nice... Guru3d seems to get their hands on pre release drivers for everything; maybe there is an ATI beta driver there that does CF for Skyrim...

Re: Fed up with AMD
ATI is always said to have a better quality picture. I've never seen it but I'll take people's word for it. I'm not as discerning as some people with video or audio for that matter. It could also be that I'm still using the same 24" Dell that I've had for 8 years now.

Still going to upgrade, but I did get it working...just had to use the leaked beta driver, the skyrim profile, and make sure regular AA was turned off while FXAA was on....too much of a hassle though.
The main reason that I got the 6970s was that they were supposed to perform better at really high resolutions...but then, once I started using my 24", I decided that was plenty large for me.enf-Jesus its been like 12 minutes and you're already worried about stats?! :-P

Re: Fed up with AMD
....if the images look washed out there is this handy 'digital vibrance' slider in the nvidia control panel.... give it a whirl, default is 50% I set mine in the 60% range, depending on the monitor's temperature.
I always tell people that nvidia's driver support is the best thing, and even if the card may perform worse than a similarly priced ati card, the driver support is worth it.....-- Intentionally Left Blank --
