    SSD Recovery?

My gf's external SSD was stepped on, and now it won't read data, any way to recover the data in there?
Australian-I feel for ya bro gaming on a piece of shit you should be twice as good at any game you play. Thats really really a scary thought. Part of me does not want you to get a new rig.

Hate to say it, but you're boned. I don't think data recovery on an SSD is even possible. Maybe if the memory modules themselves aren't damaged. If it is recoverable, it's probably insanely expensive.

Ah, ok. I don't really care honestly, just wanted to see if it was possible.

    Re: SSD Recovery?

I can't think of any normal consumer level tools or tricks to get data off a faulty SSD, especially one that won't even read. I imagine any data recovery specialist can recover what is in memory that was not physically damaged; could not estimate a price though. Seems like it should be easier than reading a mechanical drive that has similar physical damage.

    Good luck.

Soy is most likely very correct. A recovery specialist could possibly get data off of the undamaged portions. However data recovery is extremely expensive due to the required hardware and envuronment.

The last time I had to procure recovery services for one of our researchers is ran several hundred dollars per gigabyte.

So unless there's highly senstive irreplaceable data it's probably not worth it.

    Re: SSD Recovery?

majorgeek.com has a bunch of software downloads for various purposes, I was looking through them at work the last few days to try and find some diagnostic tools for various things and if I'm not mistaken, I saw several HD recovery tools, might have been some SSD tools as well. Might be worth taking a look and see if there's any good open source ones.

Hope you have some luck getting the data back.

Yeah Major Geeks has a lot of useful tools. But if the drive can't be read it mounted because of hardware damage or failure then those won't help.

Try some by all means, if the drive will mount.

That's why I said if the memory modules themselves are fine, then if there was one of the same model nearby, you could swap them out for a drive with connections that still work. I have actually done this with a Hard Drive before in a desperate attempt to get the data back. The motor was broken, and I switched the plates over to the good drive to copy the data. It worked just long enough to get the data all copied. Don't know if it would have worked longer though, I had to scrap both HDs since they no longer had the vacuum seal.

Doubtful it would have worked any longer. I had to do the freezer trick to get a hard drive to be recognized and start... it worked long enough for me to get my 10 crucial files off of it, then it died, never to work again.
