Are you referring to the software? I use AnyDVD HD, but it is NOT free. I purchased a 2 year license. Once the DVD/Blu-Ray is ripped to my hard disk, I use Handbrake to convert to whatever format I want. Typically, I convert my HD rips to .mkv to save space. Even a mid quality .mkv from a Blu-Ray rip is 3-4 GB. High quality is double or more.
Even the fastest computers take a long time converting a Blu-Ray rip to a different format. When I was using my 2600K overclocked at 4.7 GHz, it would still take about an hour to convert. Handbrake is pretty efficient and uses 100% of all cores and threads during the process.
If you can find software that takes advantage of Intel's Quick Sync technology, where the transcoding is done on the GPU portion of your processor, I have heard that it can cut down on the time for converting videos. I never got any of the free programs to work. In fact, in order to get it to work, I had to get Lucid Virtu to work first, which was a pain in the ass the first time, then come to find out, all of the good software that supports Quick Sync does not come free... and the free trails that I downloaded would crash or not start the conversion process.
I searched a long time to find the easiest solution and AnyDVD HD and Handbrake make things simple. I decided that if I have to pay for a license that can pretty much always guarantee to break the disc encryption, it was worth it.

Re: Blu ray/dvd ripper
I use VLC to turn my DVDs into MP4 to play on my Android ICS transformer tablet (tf300). All of my blueray/dvd + digital copy movies came with a "digital copy" but depending on the movie company its not always in mp4 format that is needed to play back on the android OS.
Converting movies to .mp4 with VLC media player
There is a tutorial on how to do it.
*disclaimer* I have only used this approach on movies that came with authorized digital copies but where the digital copies were not in the format that I needed. *disclaimer*
Even with that disclaimer it is legal to backup your own personal media for your own personal use.

Re: Blu ray/dvd ripper
I picked up AnyDVD HD when it was on sale, just before they went to a purely subscription model. BEST idea I could have made regarding backing up my blu-rays. It was only about $120 bucks, but MAN is it worth it.
I didn't know that Handbrake could convert blu-rays. I only use it for standard def movies. How do you configure it to do blu-rays, Heavy? I usually use this: Maximum PC | The Last DVD and Blu-Ray Ripping Guide You'll Ever Need - Page 1
Kind of long and confusing at first, but trust me, it works and they are all free. I use the .mp4 container and its about 6-7 GB (I prefer more hi-fidelity than space concerns).
This statement cannot be overstated more:

I am using this to to make back ups of my own DVDs and blu rays. I do not condone or encourage stealing copyrighted material, however, it is my legal right to backup any digital media I own. Thank you for the help guys. I bought an Archos 80
g9 for 150 bucks. Its actually not a bad tablet for what I need it for.

Re: Blu ray/dvd ripper
The music industry tried the same thing with cassette tapes back in the day and the federal government ruled in favor of the people setting precedence that if you buy it and it wears out that you have a reasonable expectation of making a backup. If they ever make a media format that is guaranteed to never fail or wear out the music/movie industry may have a leg to stand on.

06-29-12, 10:33 AM #10AnyDVD HD has NEVER failed me. One time, I got a Bluray movie for my birthday, and it couldnt decrypt the copyright protection. I downloaded the update, and BAM, it worked just fine.
They are really good at keeping the latest and greatest decryption updates. Worth the money, if you ask me.
