Re: Need non-gaming PC
Hey, that's not bad. 4 Gig is probably enough, might bump to 8 if the cost diff was small. Might skip the SSD to save a little. I wonder... does Asus make a similar board with WiFi?
I guess I'll check.
Edit: hmm... only a VGA port. What's a reasonable video solution here?

Newegg.com - ASRock Z77 Pro4-M LGA 1155 Intel Z77 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard
Maybe that? It's got a HDMI port and a DVI port.
I don't see a Micro-atx board with built in wifi. I'm also having a problem even finding anything Z68/Z77 with wifi.
Video card options:
Newegg.com - Computer Parts, PC Components, Laptop Computers, LED LCD TV, Digital Cameras and more!
Some good options there. All just over $100. DVI and HDMI options. Good cooling. All are good companies.enf-Jesus its been like 12 minutes and you're already worried about stats?! :-P

If not going for the SSD, maybe this for the HDD:
Newegg.com - Seagate Momentus XT ST95005620AS 500GB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache 2.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s with NCQ Solid State Hybrid Drive -Bare Drive
It's a hybrid drive.enf-Jesus its been like 12 minutes and you're already worried about stats?! :-P

This is also another possibility for a PSU. Gold certified, 460W, and fanless. Very good passive cooling. Should help keep things extra quiet, which is something I think he would like.

You can also go for a USB one. The software drivers are generally easy to install. If it goes bad, it's a lot easier to uninstall.
With that ASRock board, it might be a tight fit for PCI-X. If you go with the MSI Video Card I referenced, a PCI-X wireless card might cause overheating issues by blocking off one of the fans.

Re: Need non-gaming PC
So in the end we went with the Google Docs solution.
Civil: you were right about sharing. Google actually offer a reasonably fine-grained sharing approach.
- owner only
- owner plus individual(s)
- shared via secret URL
- shared via open URL
... so you can "publish" your doc as a web page, and send the URL to anyone you like. Having a google ID (a gmail account) is only required for creating the doc in the first place.
You can also allow others to edit.
Xav: based on your Office:Mac advice, my uncle will be using his Mac version more. White: I might yet build that cheap PC. Someone else has come to me, and something similar to your config looks to be good.
Thanks to everyone in this thread.
Cheers,
AetheLove
