Re: Laptop
Always gonna get hella more performance for less money on a desktop over medium grade laptop for a few hundred more. If you want medium BF3 with the ability to play where anywhere, your looking at around 750 to 900. If you want to invest in a destkop that will be able to play BF3 on ultra and have a several years of future games running high specs but you can't play in different places simply, looking at 600 to 800 for a desktop.
If you want to burn money go high end desktop, if your afraid you money wants to kill you and need to get rid of it all, go high end laptop.Dispatch the DooM

Civil, do you already have a laptop? If so, keep that one running for school (do a reformat if necessary).
Being a gamer, you would be much happier on the desktop. I have never been able to buy a "gaming laptop" that met my expectations in actual performance.

Ok, I think I may have confused the conversation a bit, so let me clarify.
This is not for me personally, but for my son for his B-day. I have both a desktop and laptop that work fine. He currently has my old desktop, core 2 duo, 8800GT, blah, blah, blah. He wants a new computer that will play BF3 and some other games as well. So, my question is should I gut the desktop he has, and rebuild it with new components, or just buy him a laptop that can be used for gaming, but also for schoolwork and such?

Use this civil: Computer Games on Laptop Graphic Cards - Notebookcheck.net Tech
I had the same debate earlier this year. I decided to build a system because of the limitations of the mobile cards. When I was looking the difference even in mid performance was way more than $100-$200 difference.

Thanks for clarifying, Civil. I still stand by the desktop if he wants to run games (for a decent while). A lappy would be able to play games, but could become obsolete much sooner.

Re: Laptop
I just bought a Sager NP9150. The specs are:
Intel Core i7-3720QM
16gb ram
Nvidia 680m GPU
Intel 520 SSD 240gb
15'.6" 95% color gamut LED screen
It runs BF3 70-100fps at 1920x1080
I sold my desktop system as this runs everything as fast and it's portable and the best part is that it doesn't look like a spaceship. It's the best computer purchase I've ever made.
