Hard drive temps
OK I'm very curious what the max safe temps of a hard drive are. I know they will differ some depending on the manufacture and stuff but average. My drives seem to run hot. The loudest fan in my case is for my hard drives and with my case open and turning it off (the fan) the temps will go over 65c . With the case open and the fan on the hot drives avg 62c idle . I didn't do a load temp test yet. My room temp is 75f. Just about every component in my case it water cooled and its pulling air form in the case out and the Rad is on the out side of the case. I thought about trying to space my hard drives apart more but its going to be a major pain to do so. Of course I don't want a drive to crash either. I have seen the drive coolers and water blocks for harddrives and thought they were crazy for getting them, now when i get the money I'd debating... Thoughts.

Honestly, I have never worried about my HD temps. If you have decent airflow in your case, the HD temps should be fine.
What are you doing that would make the HD run at an unsafe temp?

Re: Hard drive temps
wildsrv,
what makes and models of drives are they? I can look for temp specs.
High temperatures in a drive can erase the data. It might be interesting to see how close you are to the temperature limit.
Edited:
Here are environmental temp specs for two example hard drives. Environmental means ambient, i.e. air temperature inside of the PC case away from components.
WD Caviar EIDE 5-55 degC
Seagate 7200.10 0-60 degC
Operating above rated temperatures stresses components, particularly the platter bearings. Also, if the temperature gets high enough the drive can experience thermal self-erasure. Thermal self-erasure occurs when the heat or kinetic energy of the magnetized particles overcomes the magnetic alignment of the particles. As the data density increases the thermal self-erasure temperature goes down.
Thermal self-erasure works by the same principle as demagnetizing a bar magnet by heating it with a torch, but at a much smaller scale and lower temperatures.

Re: Hard drive temps
Wildsrv,
Your WDC drives - Environmental temperature limits are 5°C to 55°C (41°F to 131°F)
Your Seagate drive - Environmental temperature limits are 0° to 60°C (32° to 140°F) AND the surface of the hard drive case can not exceed 64°C. The maximum environmental temperature is derated when the drive is operated at an altitude > 1,000 ft. above sea level. See page 16 of spec below.
