    Anyone have a homegrown NAS?

I'm building a NAS this weekend if all my parts come in. Looking for some recommendations on software. Here's what I've got so far.

    Mobo- Amazon.com: ASUS DDR3 1600 AMD - FM1 Motherboards E45M1-M PRO: Computers & Accessories
Case- Amazon.com: Silverstone Tek Micro-ATX Mini-DTX, Mini-ITX Mid Tower Computer Case with Aluminum Front Panel and Steel Body TJ08B-E - Black: Electronics
    PSU- Amazon.com: Seasonic 430W SLI ATX12V Power Supply S12II 430 BRONZE: Electronics
    Ram- Amazon.com: Kingston Hyper X Blu 4 GB 1600MHz DDR3 Non-ECC CL9 Desktop Memory (KHX1600C9D3B1/4G): Electronics

I will be reusing some 1TB drives until I can afford some 3TB WD reds.
I wanted a mobo that had atleast 5 sata (wanted 6, but this one has 5). If I run freenas or something off a USB that will free up another SATA for OS. I also just remembered I have a coly of Windows home server 2011 that I haven't even played with. I have an older DLink 323 now that I just use to store my stuff and serve media (slowly) up to my TV/PS3/whatever usually through playon.
    Thanks,
    Brian

I used to but I found the pre built NAS products where you just drop your drives in worked more reliably for me. I used WHS and WHS 2011 when I did.
I access my files from PS3, TiVo Premiere and iPad and WHS 2011 did the better job of the two.
    Hope some of that helps.

I have one of those currently it's just pretty slow. After looking at the available options, this will be 10% the horsepower for less money. ZFS sounds really good also.. That will be the main reason I don't go with WHS 2011. This set up should be quiet and look really good which play a big part in this also. Some of the NAS' look a bit cheap and clunky..
    Thanks for the reply.

I considered building one but ending up going with an off-the-shelf product. I have a Synology DS411j and really like it. The software is really good and it has been plenty fast for me. I'd buy one again.

This is the newer version of it: Synology Network Attached Storage - DS413j Products

Re: Anyone have a homegrown NAS?

I have used one I built for a long time. Mine is an athlon x4 rig with a 4TB RAID 1. I have ran Server 2003, WHS, WHS 2011, Server 2008, and currently WSE 2012. Using Windows server OSes gives me some flexibility at the cost of some performance and administrative overhead. For example, I have a dvd drive on mine and I scripted ripping to auto run for music and movies. I have also used it as a DC, DHCP, and DNS server while it still performed its file services.
