Cool [Build Log] Tragbar build - aka: 'Airplane carry-on Haswell-Titan Z87E-ITX'

So this is going to be short for now, but this build of mine is happening.

The build idea is because I travel so much to build a computer that fits within the carry-on dimensions of most airlines. Then attach a small luggage roller to the side of it. The monitor/keyboard/mouse will be transported in my checked luggage (padded with clothes).

I bought the following to force myself to follow through:

    Case: Silverstone SG08B
The Airplane Carry-on mITX Titan build-41x-qee4f-_sx385_-jpg
Amazon.com: Silverstone Tek Aluminum Mini-ITX/Mini-DTX Case with 600 Watt 80+ Bronze Certified Power Supply Cases SG08B (Black): Computers & Accessories

Bluray Burner to fit said case:
The Airplane Carry-on mITX Titan build-41syly7ywbl-jpg
    Amazon.com: Silverstone 12.7mm SATA Interface Slot Load 6X Blu-Ray Writer with 8X CD/DVD RW Drive (SOB02): Computers & Accessories

    SSD: Samsung 840 Pro 512GB
The Airplane Carry-on mITX Titan build-77220-jpg
Samsung 840 Pro Series 512GB 2.5in SATA3 MDX Solid State Disk Flash Drive SSD

Now..... I am up in the air for the rest of the build. I either want to get the

Asus P8Z77-I mobo with the Intel i7-3770K processor

or wait for the equivalent Haswell parts.....

I am currently traveling and have been having everything shipped to my home. So the earliest I can build this is a little over two weeks away at the earliest.

For graphics card I am going with the Nvidia GTX Titan, I am waiting for evga to have them back in stock in their online store....

    Any thoughts? Comments?

I would either plan on taking the graphics card out when transporting, or figuring a way to secure it. That is a big card, and it's only being supported on two sides (one being the slot on the mobo). Some way to keep it from flopping, and secure it for those not-so-smooth flights.

Or, make the rig as small as you possibly can, and get a little rodie case to cart it around. I'm not sure if they come small enough, but it would be like a football helmet for your rig.

Re: The Airplane Carry-on mITX Titan build

Well, I plan on not caring about the case when it comes to dents/scratches........ It is just under the carry-on dimensions so there isn't really room to pad it much in any direction.

I do plan on securing the gfx card as much as possible, and also using locking sata cables and possibly lightly glue (super glue or AC glue) all power connectors in place....

I looked at the Lian Li case (PC-Q08), it was a little bigger than the case I got and I didn't like how the graphics card was cooled, or positioned.

Now, that mini-projector is a great idea...... that would seriously cut back on the weight issue...... time to do some more reasearch.....

Cover that case with truck bedliner. The spray-on shit. Tyhat'll keep the scratches down, and add some durability without adding too much to the dimensions. Just a thought.

Also, a couple of pieces of low-density foam to stick in the case for transport. One filling the empty space above the card, and one for below the card. Just to keep things from moving too much.

Putting it on little cart wheels will make vibration your enemy. You are going to want to possibly glue all of your connections, just to keep things from rattling and disconnecting.

A friend of mine built an its with the Lian li. Used a blue tooth mouse and keyboard. That way the only cords needed were for power and an HDMI.

Be careful. I have been traveling a LOT this year. If you are not in the first boarding zone, you will likely be asked to check your carry on luggage that won't fit under the seat. I had it happen to a guitar that I was bringing back from Nashville, and luckily I had already secured the headstock with some brown paper and a foam pad, and it arrived undamaged... but the case got scratched to hell.

I was not happy, but I wanted to get home. Just keep it in mind anytime you are expecting to carry things on.

Re: The Airplane Carry-on mITX Titan build

Also, as an owner of two Titans, I cannot recommend even getting a first Titan if you are gaming only at 1920x1080 resolution. The new GTX 770 or the current GTX 680 will fit the bill for 1080p gaming just fine.
