Do what? Always update your router firmware! What do you think they do, small "oh we updated the admin gui" well sometimes that but mostly updates relating to the networking, efficacy. Always, ALWAYS update, if they push an update its worth it to apply.

Besides most routers make it really easy to update, he'll my 8 year old linksys auto dled the updates, all I had to do was hit apply.

Its not an issue of difficulty, I just dont bother tinkering with technology unless there is a benefit. If there is a substantial gain, then I would consider.

I use Buffalo Routers here at work. I like them and I have never had a problem with them.

Cisco is also going out of business, I think. I've known several people with Asus ones. Most of the time they're great. Sometimes...there are issues.
