    Monitor Question(s)

Hey all, Upgraded my GPUs recently and the next thing I wanted to do was swap out my monitor(s) for one or two new panels.

I've currently got 2 24" panels, one cheap ACER panel with a fairly poor color palette,light-bleed, and a somewhat decent Dell 24" monitor. I use them primarily for gaming, watching TV shows, work, coding, occasional graphic design/modeling, and homework.

I've heard some incredible reviews of the BENQ high refresh rate gaming monitors and saw one in person from a classmate who really likes his. I'm interested enough that I just might grab one but I'm not quite sure. My concern is that the refresh rate boost comes at the expense of image quality. From the reviews it doesn't appear so but I thought I'd see if any TPGers have any experience with these. I used my brother's 30" HP 2560x1600 monitor for a few months before he moved out of his apartment and it's left me yearning for one...but I'm not ready to drop ~$1000 for a good 30"

I'm looking to bump the size of my main up from 24" to 27" (probably) and was primarily looking at these two monitors

Amazon.com: BenQ High Performance Gaming XL2720T 27-Inch Screen LED-Lit Monitor: Computers & Accessories

    Amazon.com: ASUS MX279H 27-Inch Screen LED-Lit Monitor: Computers & Accessories

I've got $200ish in gift cards/credit to Amazon and Prime shipping so I will be buying through Amazon. That BenQ is also marked down from $526 to $442 right now and I'm oh so tempted to nab it. I'm also interested in the fact that it can rotate vertical. I have some coworkers who code with one screen vertical. On the contrary I love how sleek the borderless ASUS monitor is. It's the same resolution, but with an IPS panel.

Another one that has my attention is this 29" ultra-widescreen ASUS

    Amazon.com: ASUS MX299Q 29-Inch Ultra Wide LED-Lit Monitor: Computers & Accessories

I love the thought of the extra screenspace, and the 2560x1080 is nice, but I'm concerned that the strange aspect ratio might make gaming look funny.

Any of you have any experience with any of these monitors? something similar? Have an alternative in the price range? I only want to spend $250ish real money so preferably something from Amazon so I can use my $200 in gift cards. So Ideally, a monitor around $450.

I have a Dell U2711, and I love it. It is a bit pricey, but they do go on sale every now and then and you can pick one up between $600-700. The 2560x1440 resolution means you will always need to have a beefy setup if you expect to run the highest detail settings on your games, so it is not for everyone. Even 2560x1080 is much more demanding than your standard full HD 1080p panels.

While I enjoy the quality of the resolution as well as the colors the IPS panel can provide, having to stay on top of the latest and greatest hardware is a bit of a burden if your expectation is to get great frame rates at the higher resolution.

I am not sure what GPUs you have, but holding out for an Nvidia Gsync monitor might not be a bad idea. Sometimes patience is the best solution to the problem.

    Re: Monitor Question(s)

I recently swapped out 2 GTX560 ti reference cards for the MSI overclocked 4GB edition of the GTX 760. I got the 4GB VRAM over the 2GB specifically to drive some big/multiple monitors if I ever wanted to. Another option I was considering, should I decide to wait on a monitor would be getting a second 4GB 760 and tossing that in there. One is just enough to run my current games on max settings (BF4, Bioshock Infinite, etc.) while driving 2 1080p monitors, and a second would allow me to crank the post-processing/AA/effects and such.

I was thinking of waiting a few months on the second GPU and getting a new panel, but I could just as easily grab a second GPU and wait on the panel.

Fixin to trade up from the 2X 560 ti myself. Any words of wisdom about the 760 and would it be worth it to go up to a 770. I want to have the option down the road to add another SLI when the time comes. I'm running 2 regular 27 inch 1080p monitors most of the time and I sometimes change to a 46 inch 1080 for playing movies and such.

One GTX 770 will run BF4 with everything on Ultra at 1080P at ~70fps. Rarely does it drop below 60.

Two GTX770s will run BF4 (Ultra again), at ~130fps, and rarely drop below 100.

Coming from an R9 280X, the difference is night and day. I highly reccomend the 770.

My 770 ranges from 45 to 90. I know part of it is that I am running Windows 7. Wondering if I have a gremlin some where else though.

    Re: Monitor Question(s)

It depends, if you get the 4GB version of the 760 you won't be too far behind the 770 but for an extra $50, the 770 does have some performance benefits over the 760. I've only got the 1 760 right now and it runs BF4 on ultra at 60fps. I do notice some microstutter from time to time and big explosions will drop the fps a little bit. If you're running multiple monitors I'd highly suggest getting a 4GB 760 over a 2GB one. They are $300 instead of $200 but doubling your memory is well worth the $100.

If power consumption is of no concern though and you have the money, the 770 might be where you wanna put your money. It's just a little bit more money for a little more performance.

    Re: Monitor Question(s)

Just an update. I ended up seeing a killer deal on the benq 27" and pulled the trigger on it. It's a great monitor and I'm loving the 120Hz refreshing CSGO rendering 120 fps. Can't quite get bf4 up to 120 fps yet with my current settings so that will take some work, but overall I'm very pleased.

If anyone is wondering about BENQ, everything is solid and the monitor is great, but it will take some serious calibration out of the box. Default settings are garbage and the brightness is blinding. Took me an afternoon to get it just right. You can get a much nicer panel from other brands but the 1ms response time is really great.

I've yet to try any of the 3d features and I don't have a ton of interest in that right now, but I might play around with it a bit eventually just to see what all the fuss is about
