Wifi crap

Ok so we have 3 pc connected to our network. My gaming pc which is wired. A wirless laptop, and a wireless desktop.

The two wireless computers are having issues with each other and their internet connection. When they're both asleep and one wakes up the connection has to reset(as per the norm). However, when the other Pc wakes up the first one resets it's connection again. This happens with both the PC and the laptop. For some reason it takes forever for it to reset, and they won't leave me alone about it.

I've looked and I can't figure it out, and can't seem to find anyone else having had this issue. So I'm throwing it to you guys. Any ideas?

Edit: I'm not having the issue on my pc, and I'm pretty sure they're internet doesn't mess up when my pc wakes.

sounds like possibly an ip conflict, but there's usually a message saying that...

Set both to a static ip to eliminate that possibility. (make sure it's outside the dhcp range set in the wireless router).

Most of the routers I've had allowed you to reserve and set a static IP by MAC address. Each network interface controller (in your case, a wired or wireless ethernet connection) will have a unique number that identifies it. That number is in hex, and is called a MAC address. The MAC is sent to the router when the machine asks for an IP address (you can also look it up manually on the machine).

If you're going to go static, do it at the router if possible. That way your machines will still use DHCP, but the router will be told which address to give to any machine in its list.

If DHCP isn't working on the client, you might have to hard-code an address. In that case, you should still config it into the router too (to make sure the router doesn't give that address to some other machine).

I've always found it easier to just set the machine static than to putz around with dhcp reservations. But to each his own.

I do mac reservation on wired and wireless with DHCP. This makes sure my network printer always gets the same IP as well as my other wireless devices. Static IPs are an option but that is a lot more involved as you have to go to each device and set the IP. With reservations you simply connect to the wireless the first time with it then log into your router and see the connection and click on "set reservation for this device" That means no other item on the network will be issued that IP

I reserved seperate ips for both through the router, but they're still having the issue.

All routers are going to be a bit different. But I recommend setting the DHCP range a bit higher, and assign everything you can as a static IP. At least devices/machines that you plan on using to host files for other devices to access. So for example, you can set the DHCP range to start at 192.168.1.10, or something. This means the first IP address your router assigns would be .10, then .11, .12, etc. You can then assign static IPs to the devices using the addresses BEFORE where the DHCP starts.

It isn't too complicated, athough most routers are dumbed down so the "average" user can plug and play, so some of the advanced features may be hard to find.

Yea I'll have to play around with it. I havn't had to do much with this router so I'm not familier with it. Stupid Comcast routers/modems...

also as a side note.....

ISP supplied router/wifi/modem combos are the cheapest they can be made. Often they can have nasty bugs, update that firmware.

The best solution is usually two dedicated boxes. One being the modem to handle talking to the ISP (if on cable try to get your own with the best specs). The other being a router/wifi router that you control.....

but alas that doesn't help your current situation.

Something I would look into. Try disabling 'magic packet' on the wireless devices. This is a feature you can use to wake up a machine remotely. Also if the router supports it disable all wake packets on it as well.
