On the AMD side of GPUs, if you can put up with being flamed for choosing AMD, you have the R9 280x (7970 re-brand) and the R9 280 (7870 re-brand). The R9 290 and the x variant still don't have any non-reference coolers shipping, so they're not actual choices unless you want to slap an aftermarket cooler of your own on it.
The 280x is between the 760 and the 770. Prices for AMD cards are unfortunately a little high right now thanks to Lite Coin mining, which AMD GPUs are extremely good at."In matters of style, swim with the currents... in matters of principle, stand like a rock."

Re: Need partial build recommendation
The case I have is an Antec case. I believe it's the Nine Hundred. According to specifications, it can support mini, micro, and standard ATX. The old MB that's sitting in there right now I estimated to be approximately 9.6" x 9.6" which is a micro ATX board.
Oh, and it's duuurty!

Processor: $200-250 for a respectable mid-range I5 or possible I7
Mobo: $120-175
RAM: $85
PSU: $85
Case: $95
SSD: $150 (you really really want one, don't build a new without it)
OS: $140
Video Card: $280
$875-980 will get you a solid machine. 8 years, probably not unless you're not very demanding. Microcenter if you have one near you has the best pricing on intl CPU's and you get a discount with buying a MOBO at same time
You may want to invest in an aftermarket cooler but you can always get one later.
I wouldn't spend more than $325 on a processor or $365 on a video card if you have a budget. You can get better performance but it will start coming at a very expensive premium for a small gain.Last edited by RhysJD3; 01-01-14 at 03:29 PM.

Re: Need partial build recommendation
The cooler isn't a requirement I ran without it for almost 2 weeks before a proper fitting liquid cooler arrived. I can play BF4 on Ultra at 90fps on a 1440 3d monitor and this rig will easily last 3-4 years.
You "could" also do a single 8GB memory dimm now and another in a year.
You don't have to do the pro MB that I did, I wanted the features on it so it was worth the extra cash to me.Last edited by Phyrelight; 01-01-14 at 03:35 PM.

Re: Need partial build recommendation
Rhys, when I said I want to beat 8 years, I was referring to specifically just the motherboard. It would be nice if I have a MB that I don't have to replace and I can just keep adding ram as needed or overclock as needed or even upgrade the CPU, etc.
Phyrelight, that's probably exactly what I'll end up doing, so I don't break the bank immediately.
3D monitor? sounds interesting, where can I get a sample of that?

Re: Need partial build recommendation
You won't get 8 years on the next one. They are changing sockets more often these days, so you likely won't be able to swap your cpu like you did before. You don't need to go Socket 2011, but get a decent i7, and you will likely get quite a few years out of it.
That being said, you also won't likely have to up your RAM if you go the 16Gig route. Since you will be buying it anyway, and RAM isn't as expensive these days, it's money well spent.
Also.....get Windows 8 if you are going to play BF4. If you are putting money into a new rig, you might as well use everything you are paying for. Run Classic Shell over the top of it, and it looks and acts like Windows 7.
And for God's sake.....put it on an SSD. Putting a spinny HDD in a new rig these days is like putting bike pedals in a Ferrari. Get at least 150 Gigs. That gives you plenty of room for the OS and a few games/programs. Everything else can go on a spinny drive.
