When would I want or need m.2?

I did a single GTX780 graphics card. I did not SLI. The game has to be optimized to see gains with SLI. 4 cards are not necessarily better than 2. Those 2 cards have 2 gpus each so they have 4 total GPUs in each setup. In teh 4 way its using 4 PCI express lanes, in quad its only using 2 but the cards are each integrated in SLI on the GPU board itself which has its advantages.

I am running BF4 on ultra settings at 90fps with a single gtx 780 graphics card.

    Re: Need partial build recommendation

Every card you add has diminishing returns even for a well designed SLI game. At best, adding a second card may get you 70-80% boost, third card might get you 40-50% more then the fourth at best may get you 10-20% more. And this requires a very high resolution setup like 5700x2000 or something as I understand it.

    Re: Need partial build recommendation

    Well,

    I did some shopping.

I figured I'd go by Fry's to look at stuff and when I got there I saw a sign outside the store that said they match internet prices so I ended up buying a few things.

Here's a list of what I picked up:
    ASUS Z87-PLUS Mobo ---- $147.99
    Intel i7 4770k ---- $279.99
    Samsung 840 EVO SSD ---- $$169.99
    EVGA GTX770 4GB ---- $439.99
    DDR3 8GB 1600MHz Patriot Viper ---- $82.99
    MS Win8.1 Pro 64-bit OEM ---- $139.99

Now, as far as matching internet prices go, it's the sales associate that has to do the searching so you really have to bug him. Hopefully I didn't overpay on any one particular thing. For anyone else, I would suggest printing out the page with the cheapest price, ie, newegg, amazon, etc and bring that with you to Fry's. For me, it's across town and I really didn't want to waste time having to go back so I did what I could.

You'll also notice the GTX 770 is a 4GB, they had the 770 2GB there as well along with the 780 3GB.

I'm not going to open up anything just yet until I'm sure I have everything I need. Feel free to "remind" me of anything else I'll need before I start tearing stuff apart.

As for a second EVO SSD, I'm going to hold off for right now in an attempt to save a little bit of money. One thing I do want to figure out is how the programs will work on my original hard drive when I hook it up as a secondary. I'm referring specifically to my MS suite, virus scanning, etc. After I install Win 8.1 to the SSD then hook up the other as secondary, what's going to happen?

Also, Phyrelight, you said your EVO is a second generation 3-bit. How do you know? I'm trying to figure out where it says this. Mine has the same model code as yours but when I got home and looked at my receipt, it says it's a TLC.

I did research on the drive before I bought it, the current run of the evo drive is 2nd generation. 3bit is TLC

the 780 with 3GB will outperform the 770 with 4GB fyi. If you get everything up and running on your primary SSD and decide to add another later you will simply need to go under disk management and initialize it.

By a whole lot? I'm trying to figure out if the extra (roundabout) $90 will be worth it.

With what you bought, you will already be able to run BF4 on Ultra with 60+fps at all times. I started with the 2gb version of the Asus GTX770, and I rarely dropped much below 70ish fps.

I would build with what you have, and play with the card for a couple hours. If it is noisy, or runs hot, return it for the 780. Either way, I look foreward to squadding up again. Now just get that pile of fun put together.

It would have been nice of NVidia and pitted each one of them against each other in a sample game on a computer with similar settings just so we can see what the frames and temperatures were like...

If you're mobo is SLI, you can always add another 770 down the road.
