I don't think the OP wants to have to stay at the current job while working on a degree.

Degrees are all well and good and much more important than they used to be. When I started in IT the only thing any University offered was computer science and that is really about programming, not IT. Nowadays you can major in sysadmin. It's a good change. IT doesn't happen in a vacuum. Too many people without degrees don't get that.

You're better off than most. The certs that are worth good money are those with a continuous education requirement... CCIE, CISSP, MCSE, GSEC...Etc.. If you have one of those with a degree, you should have no problem finding something worth while.

I can't speak for everyone but I know the team leads that do the hiring for my organization look at a degree as a checked box unless it's from a what they consider a good school(mine named off some local schools they know to have programs and then in general well known State schools and obviously Ivy League...degrees from the online degree factories might as well not even list it). Nice to have...but they care a lot more about mid - high level certs(CCNP, CCIE, JNCIP, JNCIE, VCAP, MCSE, etc) and real life experience to back it up. A degree is required for management in almost all cases though..I don't know if that's what you are aiming for though.

Certs are good, but if you want some sort of management position, you will likely need a degree. Not always, but in most cases. Tech jobs can pay well, but managing tech jobs pays better.

When the tech bubble burst back in 2001... degrees became a whole lot more relevant. I lost my job and struggled to find a job. Took me 14 months to find anything due to me not having a degree. I ended up having to take a lot less money than I wanted to get my foot in the door and 12 years later... I've worked my way up to where I want to be. If I were to want to pursue anything beyond a team lead position though, I would be out of luck. Nice thing is... work will pay for my degree... I just have to find the time to actually finish mine. May not happen until my kids are out of the house or in college.

Bleah for looking for good work at a good paycheck.

I worked for Xceed in Dallas as Helpdesk Coordinator before the tech bubble burst. We did sites like Hilton, Hilton Honors, Pampers, Survivor (the tv show). Then Xceed went down like Spynx went down against Tyson.

I seem to remember my mom mentioning PISD was looking for people. Something to do with their IT people getting better job offers and leaving without any warning.
