Regardless of if you decide to stick with Windows 7 or buy Windows 8.1... you'll want to reinstall your OS. There are things that both Win7 & Win8 do differently when you install on a SSD vs a standard HD. You'll notice the best performance if you re-load your OS.

I hate 8.1... even if it does make stuff "prettier". The menu options are a joke, and accessing advanced system settings is a nightmare. I don't really have anything good to say about Windows 8.1, except that I am using it my gaming PC simply for the compatibility of Windows 8.1 with the latest and greatest Direct X.
For all of my other machines, I have Windows 7 and don't plan on changing anytime soon.

Re: Upgrading
I don't mind 8.1 but I have installed Start8 and done a LOT of tweaking to get it to where I don't miss windows 7 as much. I guess windows 9 will be where it's at

Re: Upgrading
Well went ahead and got a GTX760 and Crucial M500 today. Also decided to pick up a new mouse as my g5 is upwards of 7 years old. Thanks for the help guys.

Re: Upgrading
You're not the guy I remember who had basically the same build as me right? GTX285, i7 920, Gigabyte MD something something MB...
And I went with the G500s, found it on sale for 40 bucks, and knew it should be very similar. I loved my g5 so wanted the closest I could get (with very little research)(NC-17) Howlin: got plans for me do you?
