Upgrading
So, I am thinking about upgrading my rig with a new video card and a SSD. I know that doing this will cause my cpu to become the bottle neck (running a i7 920) but I'm good with that for a while and plan on upgrading that later this year. Running a GTX 285, so desperately need to update that, and don't have a SSD so obviously want to get one of those. What suggestions does everyone have?

Well, you can get a GTX 660 or a GTX 760, both will play any modern game at 1920x1080 just fine. I would choose from Asus, Gigabyte and EVGA.
Edit: Between 2GB and 4GB RAM editions, get 2GB unless you're running three monitors or something silly.
For a SSD, the recommended manufacturers are: Toshiba, Crucial (Micron), Samsung, Corsair, and Plextor. Crucial makes slower drives that are very reliable and affordable, while Samsung makes very fast drives that aren't quite as reliable and cost more. Everyone else is in between.
And for reference, the felt difference between a 240GB Crucial M500 and a 256GB Samsung 840 Pro is very negligible.Last edited by Allane; 03-01-14 at 05:19 PM.

Re: Upgrading
Tax refund is my budget, don't want to spend over 350 on a card though.

I got the 4GB version of the GTX 760 and I love it. About $300 I think. I got the crucial m500 240GB ssd over cyber Monday for about $150 I think. It is fantastic as well. I have used a few Intel 520 SSDs over the last couple years and those were pretty stinking fast, but the crucial one is nearly as fast (don't know the numbers but it isn't really noticeable)

For the video card I'd look at a 770 GTX or 760 GTX. I wouldn't even look at AMD...coin mining has made their prices sky rocket...bang for the buck just isn't there anymore.
For the solid state, I'd glance through this thead. It has some decent discussion on them.

Re: Upgrading
Thanks guys, looking at a Gigabyte 760 with 2 gigs. Don't feel like springing for a 770 as my gaming has (unfortunately) dropped off so dramatically since joining the real world.

Re: Upgrading
Also, what is the best ideas/options for OS once I pick us a SSD? Currently have Windows 7 Ultimate, so should I just transfer that, get 8 or what?
And yes if this is discussed in the thread illusion linked feel free to ignore this as I am about to read that.Last edited by ab1tar; 03-02-14 at 01:26 PM.
