Its a dry heat, humidity is really low (1-5%) all the time because it sucks the humidity up the chimney.

There used to be a lot of coal heat up here in God's Country, but it was long before my time. Many houses have rooms in the basements that were specifically designed to store coal. There would be an access to the outside of the home, and the coal truck would dump it directly in. I have never seen a coal heater or stove, but I know they must have been pretty popular back in the day.

Yeah, the keyboard DOES have plastic key caps. The Cherry switch is designed just the same as every other Cherry switch, but for some reason zapping the CTRL key causes a 2 wide by 4 tall set of keys to be remapped entirely. One of the remaps is guaranteed to be a command that shuts the computer down.

So, I've got a brick, anyone want it?

I fixed it by zapping the CTRL key again with a huge static charge. Literally, just zapped the CTRL key again, and that entire column works perfectly fine now.

Anyone know the logic behind this?

ah yes... the 1950's sitcom amnesia philosophy... one bang on the head gives you amnesia... another one restores your memory.
