Re: Cord Cutting
what killed DVR satellite TV for me was during my 1 year accelerated masters when I had zero time to watch TV I recorded EVERYTHING so I could watch it when my degree was done. 2 months before my program was done my DVR HD failed and I lost all my shows...the satellite company was more than happy to send me a new HD but couldn't do anything about my lost shows. I found all my shows online so I figured "why should I pay you for DVR service when I can get everything online via streaming"

Re: Cord Cutting
Does anyone here have recent experience with Plex?
I goofed around with it not long after it forked from XBMC. I stopped paying attention to it after it went commercial.
Lately I've started thinking more about how I store media. I've always liked the model XBMC (and Plex) used which leaves the media in a server-agnostic file system and then builds/maintains an index from that without encumbering the files. Having a disk (or an array, or remote/distributed storage) feels like the right way to do it. It prevents me from ever being beholden to whatever indexing, serving and playing software I use. I can always just dump the entire software stack and still have my files.
I guess I just grew up in a file-centric world.
So if any of you use Plex I'd like to hear a review.

Huh?
I use plex, it's updated. I have Roku something 2500ish. What's your question? I like it. I recommend it. I put the Video file in the Home Movies folder. NOT the Movies folder. It works. I even download the Unsupported App Store App, to get plugins for porn and music, and Southpark. The Plugins connect directly to websites to view video. If a Video plays with Choppy sound, just change Transcoding to Transcode from Stream or directplay.
I was attracted to plex because I already had a Roku. If something else works better, and is cheaper, then by all means let me know. I also don't touch the Metadata on files, I just change the name, and mark it as watched.
I use the Free version. The only part of Plex that is paid for is if you want to watch things on the Mobile App. But When you Pay for it, you get to watch it from anywhere, not just on your own wifi.Last edited by SmokenScion; 01-21-15 at 02:32 PM. Reason: spells and clarity, and more.

Where is it asking you to pay?
Previous Roku Users
Users who had installed the Roku App prior to December 2013 will continue to have full access without any additional payment or activation. You do not need to do anything. If you believe that you qualify for this and are being told your trial has expired, please contact Roku support.
I was not aware they had moved to a one time fee. Still even now, I'd buy it. It's 4.99.Last edited by SmokenScion; 01-21-15 at 05:30 PM.
