Upgrade
Hi all,
I will be upgrading my PC before the release of BF 1. I have a mind to upgrade the PSU and graphics card. The current PSU was OK for the HD 7770 that came with the computer at purchase. But time stands still for no man. So here is my question.
Do I have to consider anything of importance when upgrading the PSU?. Can I just get any?. Or is there a possibility I could be restricted in some way?.
I thank you for your help.

Another lucky man about to upgrade, well .. the big question is first are you planning on now or in the future to SLI/Crossfire? Having 2 or more cards you of course need a bigger power supply then if you'd only picked one... Also because you want to save $$ for the next upgrade, efficiency rating IE Bronze/silver/gold/platinum/titanium .. think energy star the fancier the metal and all that

Re: Upgrade
I don't know what you have now, but if you have a prebuilt, sometimes the manufacturer will use a half-height or custom sized PSU too. So you will want to make sure what you get will physically fit in the case you have.
If you have a standard size PSU then as ape said, the efficiency rating is one of the most important things. Power rating falls in line with that as well and you'll want to make sure you have sufficient power for all your parts. Just google PSU calculator and there are many out there that will let you plug in all of your toys and it will give you a good idea of how much power you'll need. I would go at least 25% over what the calculator says your max power usage is at least. PERSONALLY I just get goofy and go for big numbers... I have a 1200W PSU in mine.

Re: Upgrade
I would like to at the start say thank you gentlemen for being kind enough to help me.
Dell XPS 8500 Desktop - Intel Core i7-3770 3.4GHz, 16GB Memory, 2TB 7200RPM HDD, 250GB HDD, Radeon HD 7770 2GB.
Not sure what the PSU is. But if I remember rightly when I looked into it a few weeks ago I am guessing around 500. I remember that I read that it was sufficient for my PC needs but that lacked future proofing and needed upgrading. I like the idea of the best I can put into my pc as I would really love to get a nice graphics card that I can play without worrying about it struggling. I was wondering if there was anything stopping me power wise from putting in a PSU that is 1200w. I will look into getting one that fits in my case. I am a person that likes quality so I really would like to get something that will be reliable and worth the buck.
I do not think that I can put in two cards. I could be wrong, but I will look into it.
i will be looking to upgrade no later than mid October. But probably in the next 4 or five weeks.

Re: Upgrade
Not many applications require anything like 1200w. You should be more than covered with a 700-800w. Just make sure it's got a high efficiency rating.

Re: Upgrade
Power Supply Tier List.
PSU tier list 2.0 - Power Supplies - Components
A good place to start and no where near a complete list. My corsait hx750 power supply was in the 2nd tier of the old list. Im happy with it but really how do you measure its performance.

Re: Upgrade
Is the computer completely dead? It's a POS. 0% performance
Is there smoke coming out of your machine along with small jets of flames? Holy shit call the fire department. 5% performance
Is there random crashes? It's not working that well. 50% performance
Is it mostly stable and doing what you want? Good performance! 80% performance
Do you never think about your PSU ever because the computer just works? Fanfuckingtastic. 100% performance

Re: Upgrade
will look at the high efficiency. In fact make it my chief concern. Much thanks gentlemen. I was worried about this and you have helped me greatly.
Now then. Now then............BuddyLee, Kanati. A couple of names that should be seen on the battlefield. I hope that when BF 1 is released that I see you and many old faces return.
WHAT are you boys doing of late?. Cartoon war with Dex and the others?.
I am glad to have heard from you both. May our Lord and God bless you both.

Re: Upgrade
I haven't been playing ANYTHING lately. Though with the new build I might start again. And you know I'll have BF1 when it comes out. And TPG will likely have a server when it does.
Take it back... I've been playing Forge of Empires a lot... for over a year. Web based city builder game. But other than that, nothing.Last edited by Kanati; 08-15-16 at 03:03 PM.

Re: Upgrade
The cartoon wars are great. Don't knock 'em until you try them.
Think 6-man squad, each playing a different charecter with different strengths. The team must work together, and adjust to the other team's counter defenses. It may look like mayhem, but I assure you it's technical, tactical, and extremely team oriented.
Overwatch is a lovely distraction and change of pace, but I will most certainly be all-over BF1.
