Re: Need some advice on a build
Makes sense. I'll look more into it and see if I can justify the extra cost. I do plan to wait to purchase around black friday time to see if I get lucky with any deals.
I'll look into that.
Another question, I don't plan to do any overclocking so should I just stick with air cooling and ditch the water cooler? Though it is not likely, I do worry about pump failure, leaks, and possible liquid evaporation over time. The possible does exist for those problems with such a cooler.Last edited by loki2158; 11-06-16 at 03:49 PM.

I mean... Yeah, there is some risk when water cooling your GPUs, and your card will probably throttle before it ever reaches its temp threshold (NVIDIA power cap BS)... But I found it to be a great learning experience, and looks flippin amazing in the end. I just Water-cooled my entire rig. It was expensive, but worth it.
My Rig:
- Custom Loop - PETG/Acrylic Tubes
- 2x NVIDIA GTX 1080s FE.
- I7 - 6700k @ 4.0
- 64 GB DDR4 Corsair Dominator Platinum (rated for 3,000 MHZ)
- Asus ROG Formula VIII board.
I'll post more pics/videos later if people are interested.

Re: Need some advice on a build
There are only a small number legitimate reasons that people can use to argue in favor of liquid cooling. Being that you're not trying to create a piece of art and you're not trying to overclock, your left pretty much only one question to ask yourself.
Are you a quiet freak?
Generally, liquid coolers are far quieter than a HeatSync and fan. If you are a quite freak, and your computer must run at the minimum dB level possible, then sure, get an AOI. But because you've already disqualified yourself from the other legitimate reasons, and because of the many negatives that come along with a closed loop, I think you should stick with air.
There are plenty of air powered solutions on the market that are worthy of even the mightiest builds. Anything from Noctua is great. Even the old school Cooler Master Hyper Series cpu coolers are still getting the job done. The bottom line is that you are right. Pumps can fail, leaks can occur, and liquid can evaporate. Despite what anyone tells you, they are not fool proof. Had I not built my own loop, I would definitely be using air.

Not foolproof, no. But the good ones talk to the system and you can keep a close eye on them. I had a great air cooler. And got rid of it in favor of an H100. Not because of quiet, or overclocking or art... But because you go from a huge assed heat sink and fan to a nice, tiny block on the CPU and because they've proven themselves over the years to be reliable.

I really like the CAM software my NZXT Kraken X61 has. It's pretty great at tweaking sound levels and monitoring the loop

Oh, I have used the Corsair software also but find NZXTs CAM software far nicer and intuitive

Re: Need some advice on a build
If I go with the 2800K chip, was considering this board:
GIGABYTE GA-X99-Ultra Gaming (rev. 1.0) LGA 2011-v3 Intel X99 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.1 USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard - Newegg.com
Any thing stick out as a problem?
I was also looking at these guys but some of the reviews gave me pause:
ASUS X99-A LGA 2011-v3 Intel X99 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard - Newegg.com
MSI X99A GAMING PRO CARBON LGA 2011-v3 Intel X99 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.1 ATX Motherboards - Intel - Newegg.com

Yeah, I just have both chipsets sitting right next to me. 6700K and last gen 5930K. Both have DDR4, though my 5930K has quad channel and 32GB as opposed to 16GB in the 6700K. I took the 6700K to Quakecon with a single GTX 1080, and it performed flawlessly. I come off as a total hypocrite for advising NOT to buy a socket 2011 chip, when I friggin own one, but it does NOT give superior results in games. I'm sure there will be some rare cases, but as a gamer, I would rather throw the money at components that make a difference in games.
But as a fellow money waster, I can only say so much to others that are about to waste their own money. I can't criticize since I do it all the time myself, but my rig was built for a case mod contest, so I went over the top with a lot of stuff. I think the 6700K rig is more suitable for the average to hard core gamer. The rest of the stuff is just icing on the cake, but it is icing that costs a shit load of money.
