The next generation of games still won't offer half what 7800's can offer. I gaurantee when Crysis comes out, between my 7800 and someones elses 9900, there won't be a difference to tell.

I play the BF series games on 1680X1050 with everything as high as I can adjust it. There are cases where that gives my 8800GTX a work out. I am certain that any of the 7 series cards would not work for me.

If your comparing individual frames in DX9 then your correct, if your including actual framerate and DX10 there will be a HUGE difference between the 7800
and the 8800+ level of cards.

Re: Building my own new computer system

I would like to add that I have played BF2142 with a 7800 GTX and an 8800 GTS on the exact same box and I had to turn settings down when I switched to the 7800. I know it's anecdotal but the 8800 GTS appeared to outperform the 8800 GTS 640 playing BF2142 on a 19" screen, period.

Well then you got riped off because I run a 7800 on high settings on every game I play and get no lag and a ping below 100.

Ahh but I am not talking about lag or ping, those are network issues.

the discussion was about the performance of video cards, not network adapters/ISPs/or networking in any way.

Specifically, the 8800 GTS 640 had an average higher FRAME RATE (not ping, lag, packet loss, or any other NETWORK issue) than the 7800 GTX running BF2142 on the same Mobo, RAM, HDD, and monitor. The difference was significant enough to need to adjust the settings down slightly (AAx8 instead of 16, a few others I dont recall specifically). Further the performance of either card will vary depending on what resolution you are running in. I believe in fact that 7800 does not have the option to perform in AAx16 without using SLI AA. The need for reduction in settings was small however, but the 8800 GTS 640 certainly appeared to outperform the 7800 GTX in this instance.

If you are curious about your FPS go to the console and type "renderer.drawfps 1" and in the upper left hand corner you will see two numbers seperated by a slash. the first number is the number of frames drawn per second, the second is the time between frames.

I didnt get ripped off, I was testing hardware.

Regards

WRONG!!! Lag is NOT always related to high ping/network latency, although that can be a cause. Lag is the inefficiency of one or more parts of your PC's bandwidth be it, network, or data transfer between NB/SB, CPU+RAM, Video Card/Sound card...HDD's can be a major factor in lag as well...So don't be mislead into thinking that because you might have a high ping rate that that is your only source of "lag".

not busting your chops...just making sure you're properly informed

Also,...i am running dual 7800GT's (SLI) at full HIGH settings 4AA and 8AF at 1680x1050, with no issue, but again..that IS in SLI, i can go higher also. I have also increased voltage and clock speeds though...mildly..

Hmmm.. I guess I have actually never seen "lag" defined. I always thought lag was the failure to update the 3d map in a timely manner; things are not where they should be or move in discrete chunks instead of subtly changing. I can be cranking out 100 FPS but still be dropping packets and having latency problems. But it makes sense that if my system is eating up cycles figuring something out (other than just rendering 3d) I could be getting great FPS and still not registering the correct locations/updates of things moving over the network.

I know when I drop in a shoddy video card (say my old 6600 GT or even my ancient GeForce 3) I can play with low FPS but still not experience any lag. Likewise, I can experience lag with the highest end of components. So it seems like lag is generally not very relative to the video card. But as said before, other components could certainly interfere with the games ability to recieve and process updates to the 3d map.

As far as a 7800 being turned down... it was relative to the box it was in. The point was, that in the SAME box, the 8800 outperformed it (which is to be expected according to the charts presented right here in this forum).

I just realized, I have totally thredjacked Imp here; sorry my bad.

We will find out when Crysis comes out, why people should throw down a little more for a DX10 card.
