Unlock bios to overclock?

Hey. I have never done this before. I can adjust my vcore voltage but my overclock is locked in my current bios version. I understand that I need to update (flash) my bios to "unlock" this and overclock my Q6600. I need help completing this so I dont "F" my mobo up. I am using an ASUS P5N-E SLI mobo and intel Q6600 processor. I have looked at ASUS website and I do see some bios versions for download but I dunno which one to use and if any of them would even help me. So if someone with experience can be so kind as to help a newbie out it would be appreciated.

go to your motherboards download page at asus's website.

find the most recent bios version (usually the biggest number, or at the top of the page). They are always dated.

Download it to your computer. Also, download asus's windows based bios flash utlity. Should be somewhere on the page of BIOS stuff, or on the utility page. It would also be on your motherboard's driver disk.

Run the program. It will ask you where the new BIOS file is....hopefully you put it somewhere easy to find. Select it, and continue on. It's going to ask if you want to save the old bios (I usually don't), and then it's going to show you some pretty bars and squares getting filled in. Maybe takes a few minutes at most to complete. You will then need to shutdown and restart.

Flashing your bios is going to change any of the custom stuff you might have put in it, so press del when you start up and check your setup.

easy stuff, once you do it...trust me.

oh, and after you read the directions I gave....and you go off and do it.....if you''re not back here in.....say.....15 minutes.....we all know that you just fucked up your bios, and will be out of action till you replace the BIOS chip or get a new motherboard.

risky business......you think it's worth it?

I've only had one BIOS flash fail on me. On my recent abit motherboard (that I actually ended up RMAing). IT failed....got pissed off....however was able to recover the original BIOS from itself (somehow....guess a safety feature).

I've never had a more hopeless moment in PC-building then knowing my BIOS flash just failed. Can't fix that.

All the BIOS available should simply better versions of the previous ones. Use the latest version; if it let's you OC you are good to go. The P5N-E SLI is a pretty good Mobo, any version should allow you to overclock. You may have to change a setting to allow you to overclock.

For my A8N-SLI and my M2N32-SLI I had to go to the BIOS called "JumperFree Configuration" and there is a field called "AI tuning" that is defaultly set to "AUTO." If you change that to "Manual" you can then change your CPU multipliers, Frequency, as well as your PCI-E clocks.

BUT WAIT! You may first want to try the "Ai Booster" and leave "AI tuning" on "default." "AI booster" worked well for me, some people had issues with it. AI Booster will allow you to set your system to some% OC or you can let it "intelligently" adjust your clock based on tenmperature and CPU load. I had run my system at ~22% OC and it ran fine; although I have massive air cooling.

Also, as Nvidia chipset Mobo you could try using Ntune to set your overclocking; I did it once and it was fine, but many people have had issues with it. I recommend googling your Mobo and Overclock and reading a lot about what other people say when they OCed their systems.

But in any case, any of those BIOS should allow you to overclock if you flip the right switches.

Re: Unlock bios to overclock?

I understand the risks which is why I am trying to be careful about this. My mobo has a safety feature that is supposed to help me recover after an unsuccessful crash but I dont want to see how that works. I can save the download to my USB flash drive. Should I do this instead of saving it to my hdd?
once flashed, will i be able to overclock? Does overclocking my Q6600 from 2.4GHz up to say 3.0GHz going to do anything for me? Thanks for the help fellas.

One of the reasons I am a big fan of gigabyte. They have dual bios boards - saved my ass one time when a flash failed. It just flipped over and loaded from the backup bios. Let me reset everything on the main one back to square one and I was back in business...

I did in fact see the AI tuning under jumperfree and I will try that. I also saw the option to let the intelligent thing adjust my clock but I am not sure I like that. I dont want it to be variable.

bios download http://dlsvr01.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/...20SLI/0801.zip

and while you're at it, you might as well update your motherboard drivers (nvidia's). Nvidia just came out with a new "auto detect" driver update utility, for both g-cards and motherboards.
http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us

go there, and use the beta "auto update" utility for both your drivers and graphics. I'd do this before I updated teh bios......or maybe after....maybe not at all.......risky business.
