    CPU and memory questions

I am planning on upgrading my system in a couple weeks and I could use some advice. The comp is primarily for gaming. For my CPU I am debating between a core 2 duo 6750 or the Q6600. Is the quad core really worth the extra 100 dollars? Also as far as memory goes, would I be better off using 4gb of DDR2 1000 or 2 gb of DDR2 1066? Thanks for your help.

You probably wont notice the difference between 1066 and 1000. But, what OS are you using? 4Gb is not useful unless you are using a 64 bit OS.

Quad Core is beefy as heck; if you are running a whole bunch of apps. There are no quad core optimized games yet. Bioshock is one dual core optimized game; but most games coming up will not take advantage of quad core. If you are into 3d modelling or CAD there are programs designed for multi core. But for the average user, and especially a gamer, two cores is just fine.

I am probably just going to use XP pro. I was thinking about upgrading to vista ultimate, but I don't really have any real need for it right now. So you would just suggest 2gb of 1000 rather than spending the extra cash for the 1066 or 4gb?

Actually I just noticed my pickings are pretty slim for 2gb DDR2 1000. So if my choice is between 1066 and 800, is the extra money worth the speed?

In Win XP you will see virtually no gain in performance if using 4 gigs over 2 gigs. Win xp can only utilize 2.25 gigs total, according to my control panel.

hold off on vista let SP1 come out and see how it goes, also like Soy said 4GB is nice but if you do not have 64Bit XP Pro you will only use something like 3.12GB of your 4GBs of RAM.

Personally on the CPU, something in the Core2 series that is only double core, no need to go too extravagant and get the quad just yet. Only time you notice a major difference is when you are doing MANY things at once.

I have a Pentium D, which is a dual core 64bit processor, I have 4GBs(technically 3.12 at the moment, upgrading to 64Bit XP Pro after the 1st of the year.) of Ram and I can do very well with BF2, TS, Xfire and Firefox all running. Along with my firewall antivirus/spyware and multimon and windows blinds. I get 40ish FPS while there is a lot of action in game.

Whereas my buddy with his Quadcore could do all that and burn a DVD and Transfer Data from his HDD to his External Drive

--Double checked what windows can see via My Computer and it is saying I have 3.12GB

GREAT memory for the price. As for 1066 ram, Are you sure that your motherboard can handle ram at those speeds?

Good question! Always check if things are supported because if they aren't experience says things may not work the way you expected

Yes your that board does support 1066 ram. I've just never liked ram speeds in excess of 800 mhz, they allways seem to break faster and on top of that i really dont even know if they give you that much of a performance increase. I would wait intill someone with a little more experiance with ram gives you their opinion.

The price of the 800s after rebates is pretty sexy too.
