Re: Preparing to build a PC - need YOUR help.

Chip: Looks like the Intel Core 2 Duo E6850 Dual Core is the top of the line dual core. I suspect that I will run fine off a dual core for quite some time.

I will run RAID0, with storage of important stuff staying on the old Dell. This machine is being built for performance only.

Power supply: The dell is going to stay intact (proprietary piece of shit). I am concerned that I may want to add something down the road and the 550W wont do it in this new machine. I guess with a standard case, fitting a new power supply isn't that big of a deal.

Monitor: I dont know much about them, but I am looking for something about 20 inches or so.

McStrange, I am not blowing you off here, please continue to chime in if you have the time and patience.

I could read to myself for the next three months and not have made the progress I made in 1 hour of chitchatting with you all.

Yeah, two disks running in RAID0 will dramatically improve load times. Your Mobo will support several RAID types on quite a few disks. If you arent worried about data safety it would make map changes in BF2 flash by.

I am using a 700 in mine. You could go 700 for about 30-50 more bucks in the same price range. But if you are not going SLI/lots of disks, 550 is plenty.

Resolutions of 1280x1024 and down dont really benefit from SLI and the benefit from SLI is margninal until about 1800. Most 20" LCDs will be 1280x1024.

I feel that the E6850 would be better for gaming than any of the quad core CPU's. I have built two systems in the past several months and went dual core in both. I put a 6700 in one and a 6850 in the other. Both run great. Click on my 3Dmark link to see my score and details.

A few weeks ago I went through the CPU charts at Tom's Hardware. They showed the Q6600 and E6850 about neck and neck. The difference was where each processor prevailed. The E6850 prevailed in most real-life apps, and Q6600 prevailed in benchmark tests. Based on that, I would choose the E6850. Also, I BELIEVE (but didn't verify) that the E6850 uses less power.

You guys are great, thank you all for the input.

I know I have allocated enough money to build a great PC, but I obviously would like to save some of the cash so my wife can buy enough RAMEN noodles for us to eat in 2008, (She starts getting hungry around November when I fall short on cash for the year).

I have a strong idea of what I am going to order now.

I do have a fear that I will have it built with Vista and that Vista will slow the thing down (as opposed to XP home). Perhaps my fear is unfounded.

Dude, I was checking your 3Dmark scores out a few weeks ago. Impressive. Looks like that video card is diesel powered?

Both systems I built are identical except for the CPU. The rig with the E6700 is running on a 65" Mitsubishi Diamond. I get around 100FPS on BF2 on that one and over 100 FPS on my gaming rig. Never have any video lag or issues. Load the games fast and everything is smooth. Plus being that I have sister video cards and both rigs are SLI ready and can go dual SLI in the future if needed on one rig with a buy just one new card for the other.

Anyway, go with the E6850 and upgrade to a quad in the future. Just make sure your MB is quad core ready. That is what I did.

Clint - all the advice given above is superb, but have you considered a BigDog box?

Nuck's a hunter. I would guess that his video card is a diesel dually with cooling fins that are chambered for 3" Magnum shells.

Bryn - tracking on the BigDog box. I want to give more direction than dollar amount. This will be a bigdog box.

Regarding Nuckle being a hunter, I have been on the other side of the battlefield from him, and did indeed feel....... hunted.
