Re: Preparing to build a PC - need YOUR help.
Chip: Looks like the Intel Core 2 Duo E6850 Dual Core is the top of the line dual core. I suspect that I will run fine off a dual core for quite some time.
I will run RAID0, with storage of important stuff staying on the old Dell. This machine is being built for performance only.
Power supply: The dell is going to stay intact (proprietary piece of shit). I am concerned that I may want to add something down the road and the 550W wont do it in this new machine. I guess with a standard case, fitting a new power supply isn't that big of a deal.
Monitor: I dont know much about them, but I am looking for something about 20 inches or so.
McStrange, I am not blowing you off here, please continue to chime in if you have the time and patience.
I could read to myself for the next three months and not have made the progress I made in 1 hour of chitchatting with you all.

I feel that the E6850 would be better for gaming than any of the quad core CPU's. I have built two systems in the past several months and went dual core in both. I put a 6700 in one and a 6850 in the other. Both run great. Click on my 3Dmark link to see my score and details.

Re: Preparing to build a PC - need YOUR help.
A few weeks ago I went through the CPU charts at Tom's Hardware. They showed the Q6600 and E6850 about neck and neck. The difference was where each processor prevailed. The E6850 prevailed in most real-life apps, and Q6600 prevailed in benchmark tests. Based on that, I would choose the E6850. Also, I BELIEVE (but didn't verify) that the E6850 uses less power.

Re: Preparing to build a PC - need YOUR help.
You guys are great, thank you all for the input.
I know I have allocated enough money to build a great PC, but I obviously would like to save some of the cash so my wife can buy enough RAMEN noodles for us to eat in 2008, (She starts getting hungry around November when I fall short on cash for the year).
I have a strong idea of what I am going to order now.
I do have a fear that I will have it built with Vista and that Vista will slow the thing down (as opposed to XP home). Perhaps my fear is unfounded.

Clint - all the advice given above is superb, but have you considered a BigDog box?

Bryn - tracking on the BigDog box. I want to give more direction than dollar amount. This will be a bigdog box.
Regarding Nuckle being a hunter, I have been on the other side of the battlefield from him, and did indeed feel....... hunted.
