Re: is a cheap upgrade possible

now if I wait til say May? to upgrade would other cards drop in price making other cards available?

just curious if by the time I actually go to buy the parts some thing else would be a better option.

I would say by may the 8900 will be out and the 8800 will be cheaper.

Chinese sources claim that the upcoming GeForce 8950GX2 card will sell for $599 USD. It is rumored to be the successor of the previous 7950GX2 and will come with a total of 512MB GDDR-4 memory per GPU. As part of the new 8900 series, NVIDIA plans to introduce the GeForce 8900GTX which will replace the current high-end 8800GTX. It will ship at a retail price of $549 USD and it will also see the inclusion of GDDR4 memory which allows NVIDIA to raise the clock speeds to outrageous 2200MHz frequencies. The power boost may also come from the new 80nm manufacturing process.

Although Nvidia entered the GPGPU market later than ATI, it looks like the Americans are quite happy with their G80 series general processing capabilities. As of now, G80 is still the fastest graphics chip on the market. It has 128 unified shaders and can process a lot of pixels. But those shaders aren't necessarily proficient at rendering complex graphics, as science calculations can easily be run on a graphics card disguised as a small shader program. Now, Geforce 8900 GTX is expected to have 25 percent more Shader power, and thus, dual Geforce 8950 GX2 configurations should provide a lot more Shader and Pixel power.

However they didn't have a time frame on the incoming new card?

It is inevtiable that in the next 5 months they will update the other 8 series cards to the G92 technology that the GT uses which may push the price of the GT down. it is also likely that by then there will be entirely new cards available (the 89xx) from both Nvidia and ATI.

    Also, like I asked earlier:

I assume you will not be upgrading that anytime soon either?

But at 200 dollars I am sticking by the 8800 GT 256. It outperforms the ATI 3850 across the board and your power supply should handle it fine. If you want clarification just go through the graphs they give you in that article.

The 3870's available at newegg start at 240 dollars and in that price range you are better off with an 8800 GT 512 for sure.

Come May though all bets are off... who knows what will be available by then? Only the vendors.

    Good luck.

Let's be honest here. In 5 months, we will be having this came conversation, except we'll be talking about a new pair of cards that you can compare against and you could easily be waiting yet another 5 months for that nicer card to come down in price. The point is, this will go on indefinitely. ATI and NVidia are going to be endlessly making newer, faster, zomgshiny video cards as long as they're in business. It's a business model that works great cause of the 5% of the system builder population that jumps on the innovations early on so that they have the money to keep building new card and letting the newest stuff start dropping in price to where us cheap asses are willing to buy them.

So, really, if it's a matter of having the best bang for your buck, where "your buck" is defined as a set budget price, then seriously, buy whatever is available now. There isn't any serious reason to put yourself in a constant holding pattern waiting for that next card to come down in price, cause believe me the card right behind it will look attractive to you and you will want to wait for it too.

My advice, if you want to wait for the prices on the 8800GT 256MB to slip down further then by all means, but if you're aiming for a budget price then buy what you can afford at the point when you're ready to buy.

the reason I am holding off until may is because of the current lack of funding. May time my budget should have enough spare change to toss into my new card.

Could I play L4D on my PC?

I know that sounds stupid, but what I mean is could I play it on "my" computer. I have a Acer Windows Vista Home Basic. Intel Celeron 550 @ 2.00 GHz proceser(whateverthat means). And a Gig of Ram. I know what the minimium requirements are, but wondered how bad it would be on my PC. Would upgrading to 2 Gigs of RAM help.
