Re: New rig in the works...thoughts?
thats the same card i have and it rocks. i just put this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835118124
on the card today and boy does it keep those load temps down. it keeps my idle at about 43C and load temps under 60C. I was hitting 80C after hours of gaming on the stock cooler. YIKES.

Re: New rig in the works...thoughts?
I do not like the case at all. Look at this case - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811129021
I would also look at this CPU - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115028
I would also change my PS to maybe this - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817153042
I could do some tweaking beyond that but those were the big items.

Re: New rig in the works...thoughts?
i wouldnt necessarily say that the conroe is better than the kentsfield for video editing. now straight gaming and single threaded apps, go conroe but the quad will totally please you.
also, what i said about the aftermarket cooler...you can keep the stock on there but i would suggest downloading rivatuner and upping the fan speed to atleast 50%. along with this you can re-seat the cooler with as5 and that should totally help. the cards thermal tape is complete crap. if nothing else, you can feel safe knowing that this card is rated to handle up to 100C and that means it can handle even more but it should never see these kind of temps.

Nuck,
The PS, Case, and Processor you suggest are right on. i looked at comparison charts for those parts compared to what i had picked out and your won out in every field.
Cecil,
Good call on the SATA DVD drive.
Makeout,
So you would suggest using the aftermarket cooler on the GPUs? We are going to be doing some pretty intensive rendering on this system and I'd hate for the GPU to crap out in the middle of it.
All,
These are awesome suggestions. I will make a post tomorrow with the new line-up and you all can take another swing at it. Thanks.

Re: New rig in the works...thoughts?
Dont bother with SLI unless you are going to use resolutions greater than 1400x1200. I recommend a *single* 8800 GT or 8800 GTS (the new G92 technology based GTS, not the old 640 or 320).
There is a lot of discussion about SLI here: http://www.texasteamplayers.com/inde...5987#msg305987 if you are considering SLI, PLEASE READ THE WHOLE THING!
Many people do not understand SLI, and for the vast majority of users, especially with newer 8 series GPUs, SLI is not useful and can actually hamper performance.
Other than that, I say go dual core not quad core for now, and the rest of it kicks ass. Also, with no SLI, maybe consider a 550 watt PSU?

Re: New rig in the works...thoughts?
I agree with what soy posted about the single video card.
I also do not see a sound card on your list. Do yourself a huge favor and buy a sound card. On board sound cards are the poo.

Re: New rig in the works...thoughts?
In regards to the sound card,
i have a really nice audio recording sound card with external mixer.
Soy and Nuck,
the dual video cards are not going to be SLI'd. I need to quad display though for video and production.
Big,
Most of my installs with SATA drives have been done with Linux and have crapped out everytime. You think SATA will be fine for Vista?
