Re: Vista
hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.
I'm no vista expert..........so in the hotfix/patch/BF2 specific stuff .....I won't know.
I know your temps are solid, since I checked those before I shipped it out. Well venitlated, with ATI-tool on for more than an hour, and it didn't break 70C. And graphics cards always run hot as crap....so anything under 70C is "stable".
As for sound....of course...you are hardware audio, with the X-fi effects enabled. I would suggest letting BF2 use it's autodetect for setting yoru graphics and other game settings, and letting it run. If it can do those settings stably.....but crashes when you jack up the resoultions (especially on a widescreen monitor) or the sound quality to 128 voices ......then perhaps BF2 is showing it's age and lack of EA support since Vista became more mainstream.
keep me posted.

Re: Vista
Will do.
All in all, the temps haven't come close the the ATI-tool image. I am going to take my time reviewing how things work, incrementally applying the hotfixes.
I am verbose in the hopes that it documents the process, it would have taken me a while to find the Nvidia Vista fixes posted by CoCheez on my own.
The box is fine. I will post in here, but my level of concern is at zero. I knew a pre SP1 OS was going to take tuning, especially with BF.
Thanks to all,
Clintok

Re: Vista
She's definitely fighting me (Bf2 the old hag that is) but I love her. I turned back on hardware support for audio with X-fi and EAX and it crashed again, producing invalid CD key error on next attempt to go on line. I know I can over come this by reinstalling, I cannot find the BF2CDkeycheck in the temp folder that people talk about on line, and EA recommends reinstalling, possibly patch, possible BF2.
In order to proceed troubleshooting, I need to ask. Does anyone know how to back up the key mappings specific to my profile? It is a bitch having to remap keys and I have done it twice. After a crash, it lost my profile settings and I had to do it over again. If I had a back up of my profile, video, audio, keyboard mappings for land, helo, plane, etc - I wouldnt care if it crashed while troubleshooting.
Thanks.

Re: Vista
yup. and even then, when you choose to reinstall, or uninstall the current BF2 installation, at the end it should/will ask you "do you want to keep your settings" or something like that.
I know 2142 does. However I have also had crashes that cause all my keys to become unbound.
like wileE said....copy that folder in your My Documents as a backup, and then just drop the files back in when you reinstall.

Re: Vista
Reinstalled, patched, Reduced the audio to software and medium and it stabilized. I am not yet convinced, but just had a great couple of rounds.
Now I understand why I sucked on the TV missle so bad. Not to say I am any good on it, but I have a lot more time to adjust before reaching my target, and hit people on the ground rather than hoping I could just hit the ground.
Now I want to see 2142.
