By the time I get ready to purchase another CPU, I hope to be in the market for one of the 45 nanometer chips by either Intel or AMD.

Word. I knew this FX-60 would be a good stepping stone helping me keep from having to upgrade my everything right away, but some of the new shit coming out makes me happy in the pants.

hmm.... maybe I'll go home and see about overclocking this bastard finally. It's been kinda cold in the condo lately anyways.

In all fairness, what does "rock stable" mean anyway? Can you give a measure of that? Do you mean it doesn't blue screen? Because, I know this guy who overclocks and claims stability but based on gaming against him I'd wouldn't call his connection stable. I suspect dropped bits and recalculations...

fair warning, you grossly underestimate TTP demographics... teenagers to old guys, farmers to lawyers, kiddos to doctorates...

Rock stable is 24/7 folding protein molecules for Stanford University .. It puts the cpu under 100% load all the time. Which is what I do with this computer .. And game a few hours in the evening.
But to get to that point I ran Orthos small fft test for 24 hours .. Then multiple runs of prime 95 and occt. And then runs of memtest to check the memorys stability. It has to be very stable to complete a WU ( work unit ) I never get any blue screens / reboots or any funny stuff.

Hmmm, interesting. Why not put a real face on overclocking for TTP? Correct me if I'm wrong, it is my belief that Work Units are consistent through time (otherwise they'd hardly be a good benchmark), you run your machine 24/7, and you seem to know what you're doing. In my mind, you are in a position to deliver high quality benchmarks for/against OC.

Why not run a week of SU's FAH program with the factory settings and then a week without... document the whole process, WUs completed, gaming hours versus non-gaming, etc.? That'd be a pretty decent article too.... sounds like some work but I'd be very interested in the final numbers.

Of course, different architectures might yield different results but it's a start.

Well to give you some what of an Idea I will use super pi 1m test for an example..
At stock which is 1.8ghz and the memory at 800mhz my super pi 1m run was 26 seconds
Over clocked run at 3.2 ghz was 16 seconds. I can do this again pretty easy and post some screen shots.
Give me a day or so.

I really dont want to put it back to stock for a week, it would kill my points per day average. And I am really trying to break into the top 20 for my team.

I could do some 3dmark at stock and then over clocked and post the screens
    As with Aqua Mark III
    And the Light Source bench.

Those numbers are really close to what is mathematically possible but they do indeed show that a longer test is called for (that is, mathematically I'd expect ~14.6s as the best possible). Perhaps once you won the prize for your folding team you could hook us up?

Its not really a prize, just some friendly competition. And when I reach the top 20 I will just want to get into the top 10 just as bad

I have an e6850 3.0, nvidia 8600gt that is slightly OC, 3 gigs of ballistics ddr2 800mhz ram, 650 w power supply, p35 gigabyte MoBo with windows vista home 64. I get shit for scores in 3dmark but i can play crysis, 2142, world in conflict, cod4, whatever i throw at it, it can play with all settings on high with high FPS and no jaggies or particals.
What do you mean by "bombing?" I get between 0.9 and 1.4 FPS on the CPU test! And that is fairly normal.

That E6850 oughtta push hard, its a sweet processor. From your CPU-Z post earlier, I noted along with SFG and Standard you oughtta be running 3.0Ghz and not 2.0 But that aside, a score around 1 FPS on the CPU test is normal. If you link your 3dMark we can use it as a diagnostic tool too. We can use the information maybe to help you bring that score up! Post it man!
im sure it does run at 3. its called speedstep and will bump up to 3GHz when needed (like gaming). i now you know this soy, just pointing it out because you asked.

also, december 13th 2007 i knew jack about OC and i was trying to play css on my 6 year old comp (yes i built it) with frames less than 10 fps sometimes. By the end of the month (i was on winter break) I had my new build (built it, btw this is super easy if you know how to read) OC and stable(gaming, occt, orthos, prime). I learned very much by reading on the net and i just have to say that it is pretty easy to learn this stuff. i wont say effortless but it isnt rocket science. BD, i just want to point out that you make it sound (whether or not you intend to) tough to do this stuff but it aint shit compared to one course in my undergrad study so far. I mean, compared to that...its childs play...haha.

i still dont see why buying a phenom is the smarter choice right now...maybe im too stupid...maybe not. still looks like going core2 duo is nicer or even intel quad. hell, the best thing i see now for the buck is the 45nm chips from intel. boy i wish i woulda waited a month and got one of those.
