They still have a long way before they become affordable for exclusive use, but so does everything when it's new. They'll come down much more quite quickly - look at how much DVD-R drives were before.

A solid state (and let's just call it a flash drive like it is) drive will load windows in like 5 seconds.

    That's useful for any computer.

These things are badass and will revolutionize mobile computing. And the implications for faster load times is looking good for the desktops too.

My brother just got a MacBook Air. It is at it's thickest 0.76" and it uses these solid state drives. Puts my damn 7.2lb widescreen laptop to shame in terms of portability.

I wanna see 'em get bigger and a LOT cheaper before I invest...wish I could afford it now though.

considering how less complex, and thus cheap an SSD has to be to produce and use.....it's fucking ridiculous they cost as much as they do right now. A super badass, tricked out motherboard with 4 SLI sockets, dual CPU sockets, and integrated wifi adapters costs less than a 16GB flash drive.

    ridiculous.

Do you mean load as in, boot or load as in install?

5 second boot times would be nice. For that matter, I'd like to run my OS on a flash drive, lol. Pull my flash drive out, stick it in another computer and have my whole system come up as if I were at home.

Like, taking your whole PC with you on your keychain.

    That'd be cool.

ah, I guess I was remembering incorrectly, or just older info on them. But still the price is a bit to steep for my tastes.
and they're saying they can absorb like 1000G or 2000G in shock....compare that to a normal HD's 100 or 200G.

    http://www.tomshardware.com/2007/12/...ves/index.html

They compare the Samsungs and other "low end models" to the MTron, which schools their ass, badly. They also compare a WD Raptor 150GB to the 4 or 5 SSD's. They ALSO RAID-0 2 Mtron 32GB SSD's.......blowing the tops off some shit in the later benchmarks.

    Bye bye HD's.

    Re: Solid State Hard Drives

They had me until "$1,500 for the 32 GB model"

    *gulp*

No increase in BOOT time is worth THAT shit.

My computer boots in around 25 seconds as it is (as best I can estimate just sitting here thinking about it.).

My billable rate is HIGH, but not high enough that Im concerned with 20 seconds of downtime while I wait for my computer to load, LOL.
