    Blue-ray

I'm considering getting a blue-ray player now this format has won out. Any recommendations? I'm currently looking at panasonic dmp-bd30k vs. the ps3.

ps3 has had problems with the disc spinner misaligning and slowly scratching your discs

The PS3 is upgradable and supports BluRay's most recent 'standard'. Plus it's a media center and plays games to boot.

Even the cheapest stand alone bluray player is not worth the price compaired to the PS3.

    PS3+HDMI= HD goodness

Right i saw get the PS3 if you wanna do blu ray.

Just liek you should get a 360 if you wanna do HDDVD.

There's also up-converting DVD players. Those convert the normal DVDs to a 720P 1080p, or 180i while its playing. Thats what we have, it doesn't look quite as good as a Blu-Ray or HDDVD player, but it comes pretty damn close.

I would say...the stand alone. I suspect the PS3 will have the same durability issues alot of the Xboxs had when used as primary players. I use a sony Bluray player on my 57" MItsu Diamond...you really cant beat it...plus the upconversion for normal dvds is really quite good.

don't fall for the high priced monster digital cables. check out this thread.

having said that, the PS3 works awesome as my player. the one annoyance that i have is that you have to either use the controller to play the movies, which isn't really intuitive, or purchase a $25 remote. i'm leaning toward getting the remote, but opting out for now.
