AMD set the bar, and tripped over it. Until I begin seeing better results and press from AMD, I will be an Intel fanboy.

    well said HeavyG,
Trigger, I was not including overclocking performance, but your assessment is 100% accurate.

As easy as it is to overclock nowadays it's a given. The Intel chips don't even need a bump in vcore to get a solid bump in performance so there's no risk.

Yeah, that's a fair point. The Intels definitely have significantly more O/C headroom.

I guess I'm willing to suffer a little performance loss to support the competition, because i know what the options would look like in the absence of it. At least for near-term. If I thought AMD was a lost cause I guess I'd have to reconsider.

You're right that it would suck if AMD went down.

I kinda hope they come out with something interesting just so that Intel stays on it's toes.

Yeah, it's going to be very interesting to see where their strategy goes. They just canned the executive in charge of their technology strategy, so they probably don't know where they're going yet, either.

The enthusiast market isn't big $$, but it does have nice juicy margins, and good marketing value. If you look at what seems to be their platform approach, I would think it's a little better suited to the mid-range "easy builds only" and non-system builder types. More of the "value" market. The whole "platform" approach only helps them at the high end if ATI can take the high end video market back.

I really do wish them the best of luck, though. They're the last and best of the alternative CPU makers, and if it weren't for them we'd all be driving PIII's, or worse.

    Re: AMD Phenom

Agreed. AMD makes amazing components! I have been a fan of AMD for the last few years after using one over an Intel. The Intels that we had at school which were 2.4ghz P4's were about half as fast as my loaded down 1.8ghz Athlon 3000+. I have noticed with AMD's that they run like a faster Intel but with a lower clock speed. We now have at our school Pentium D's at 3.2ghz I think and they are equivalent speed wise to my computer now. Graphic wise no because they use Intel eXtreme graphics. I have also been a supporter of the underdog.
