    ATI graphics error

hey guys. I've been messing around with installing different linux distributions and stuff for awhile, and in the process i had to reinstall XP. i reinstalled the driver for my ATI Mobility Radeon X1400 through Dell's driver support page. It works great for TF2 and Far Cry, but when i try to run the real game (CS:S), i get this error before the game starts:

"Your video drivers appear to be out of date and could cause problems if you choose to continue and run the game. We strongly recommend that you follow the link below and update your video drivers to the latest version available from your driver vendor."

Then there's my driver version number: 6.14.10.6618 for my X1400, and a link to the driver update page.

Obviously, i tried the driver update page, but the updating utility they have there is only for desktops. And i have a dell laptop.

Is this a directx issue? How can i check what version of directx i have?

Oh, i almost forgot, this is important: I can click "continue anyway" when the steam problem comes up, but when i connect to a server (and the game tries to load the map i guess) CS:S shuts down and i get this error: Internal driver error in IDirect3DDevice9::Present().

Anybody know what this is or how to fix it? Why does TF2 work if css doesnt?

apparently its a pc/hardware forum problem instead of a css forum problem. my bad. i just figured CS:S folks might know what to do. Any ideas? anyone?

Dell certifies its own drivers for laptops, because nothing says quality like proprietary interfaces.

Anyway, try the Drivers and Download page at: http://support.dell.com/support/down...n&lnki=0&s=gen

See if there are new/updated drivers available for your model number.

Except that Dell isn't on the list of supported manufacturers, Target.

You have to get the drivers through Dell, or else use a modtool to make the regular ones look like Dell-branded drivers.

    Re: ATI graphics error

I've used the ones I've posted on a couple of Dell laptops that we have at work and never had an issue. They were not running the X1400 but different other ATI chipsets.

If you need the modtool, you can get it here and follow the instructions in the readme.

Yeah, Dell is where i got the driver from in the first place. From the driver page for my laptop: http://support.dell.com/support/down...WW1&hidlang=en and i get this/these errors. I was thinking it might be a direct x problem, since the second error said:
    Code:
    Internal driver error in IDirect3DDevice9::Present().
And i know there's a way to do this w/out modding the driver or whatever target suggested because before i reinstalled xp, i had a driver that worked. I had also gotten css to work in vista at one point.

    Re: ATI graphics error

It sounds like a Directx issue. You can go to start >> run and type dxdiag to bring up your directx diagnostics to get your version. You should always try to run the latest version from here.

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en

If you update your directx and you are still having an issue, try what I posted below just for shits and giggles.

    1. run dxdiag (run -> dxdiag)
    2. under the display tab click test Direct3D
NOW YOU HAVE TO INTERRUPT THIS TEST WHEN YOUR SCREEN FIRST GOES BLACK
    3. once the direct3d level 7 test begins press any random letter keys and it will say you interrupted the test by pressing a key
    4. you should now let it test direct3d level 8 and 9 (hopefully without a problem; this directx cube will turn up on screen)
    5. Launch your game and test
