Sherriff in trouble! lol
So i got my new rig and tf2 is acting worse than before.
Its not a ping lag, but a skip or lag that occurs for about the first 15 minutes i join. Then it seems to settle down and stop. However it is impossibel to play with it acting like that. Skips last for about 2 seconds, kind of like spikes, voices lag and repeat over and over for about 2-4 seconds.
Is there somthing caused by this in my high resolution not being able to be supported by computer? 1280 X 1040.
Is there somthing i need to adjust in settings? Rate is 30000, cl_update rate is 66, and so is cl_cmdrate.
Is there somthing in the graphics, turn all options of high to medium? What about the two options with words starting with A, antiliasing or somthning and another, should i set those to somthing, turned that one to 2x and didnt help.
Has anyone else experienced this? Please help good ole Sherriff!
Also CSS plays fine and better than before, however company of heroes has those skips or lag pauses happening to me in game vs the computer on campaign mode.
Shit is all high grade stuff and high dollar, bigdog built it, and did all this to avoid having these types of problems. Im sure its just a setting issue, or some hardware not getting along with eachother, or maybe somthing got slightly damaged in shipping. Not sure but big says if css is working than all is fine with the internal stuff. However ive found that cs isnt near as big of a game as tf2 and company of heroes. Is it lack of ram issue that could cause this? I have ddr 3. ill check on how much.

Bet on this.... You have windows automatically updating, which should be turned off.
You have your antivirus automatically udating, which should be turned off.
You have something running a scan, which should be automatically turned off.
Put your money there, because from what you described, I am putting my money there.

My guess is you have norton or something popping up saying "hey this program is trying to access the internet". That, or steamfriends is popping up some bullshit, and you need to disable it's ability to do that.

also, sherriff, I recommend that you run the program in windowed mode, so you can see your desktop without having to alt-tab. this will let you know if any popups or warnigns are associated with the entry lag.

Not sure about any kind of setting that can be doing this. Follow big's reccomendation about window mode to see if the desktop starts acting up. You can do that by going to the video settings in the menu.
Also, Im moving this to the PC Hardware/help forum, maybe you will get some more responses there.

Turn off indexing in Vista if you haven't already. It isn't like most indexers and runs even if your PC is active and thrashes the hell out of your HD.
This seems to describe how to do it well enough:

Re: Sherriff in trouble! lol
From your description it sounds like the problem is manifesting itself in the loading process of your more texture dependent games. Normally, the very first time you load each map in Source there is a lag time while it caches and verifies everything.
If the culprit isn't a running process (anti-virus, etc). I would suggest trying to turn down all of your graphic settings to low. Then shut down TF2 completely, then restart it. See if you get the lag still. If you don't, slowely turn options back on and continue the shutdown/reopen process. If you continue to have problems. Update the post with any additional information you might have.
(Truthfully, I think this is going to be an additional process that is trying to complete a action when you load TF2. The reason you feel it on TF2 more, is because TF2 requires more resources, and thus the lag is worse)
