Re: Computer for $650
Crustaceans have legs, too.
That computer is WAY better than mine. While I'm sure it's not nearly as awesome as the rest of your computers, if my computer can play Orange Box and the Battlefield games, so can that computer.
Just for fun, here are my specs:
AMD Athlon X2 3800+ 2.00 GHz
1 GB RAM PC4200, 2 x 512 MB, 533 MHz
NVIDIA® GeForce® 6150SE (onboard)
NVIDIA GeForce 8400 GS (upgrade)
200 GB HD
By the way, I'm at least able to run HL2 on high settings, no problems.Just make sure you shop around for a while if you have the time to make sure you get the best deal, Rock_lobster.
You beat me to it, ninja! :P

Re: Computer for $650
Okay, peanut gallery's "helpfulness" aside, the box isn't a bad starter, but I'd definitely upgrade that video card and find out how many watts that power supply puts out. I'd also find out if the Radeon is a PCI-Express one or an AGP one. If it's AGP, skip it entirely. (Well, it's too late now since it was yesterday's Woot.)
Basically, find out how expandable this thing is. Personally, I think you could do better just building your own for the same price.

Actually Dues, that processor would be almost half the price of the whole system. Sometimes having someone else who buys the parts in bulk comes out cheaper. I did some comparing before I got my new rig and I had it built by CyberPower for half the price than if I would have bought all the parts and put it together myself. I still have the old one I was using and may take it apart and just replace the internals when I'm ready for a new one(if and when I can afford it again with these darn gas prices).

They all buy in bulk, and labor isn't free, so 9 times out of ten the latter will be more expensive.

Re: Computer for $650
If you are willing to buy from a half dozen different vendors you can almost always build for cheaper. But doing that is a) a pain in the butt... and b) possibly not as cost effective as it could be with shipping costs. There ARE occasions when you can get a hell of a deal on a prebuilt machine. And 650 for the machine shown is not bad at all.
That phenom chip is about 170 bux right now. The blu-ray drive is going to run about the same. Gig of ram... another 60 or so... The two 500 gig drives another 150... Extra vid card 35 bux... The case another 25...
So that totals up to just a hair over 600 dollars. With shipping around 650. And then you have to put it all together and hope everything works right the first time. And I didn't even figure in an operating system which will put the DIY system well over the 650 dollar mark.
Personally... If I were in the market for a lower end system I'd buy a pre-built any day. If I am building a high dollar gaming rig, it's worth it to build your own. But the margins on lower end systems are soooo slim now that it's not worth the time and effort to build them. Buy a pre-built just like you are doing.

Nobody attacked him.
People were just pointing out that he was posting wood.
Just because you saw something doesnt mean you must post about it. Make sure it's relevant.
I still think that computer is a complete waste of time for anyone who plays games seriously and this is a community of serious gamers.

GENERAL discussion > PC Hardware and Technology
Nope, sry, don't see the words "GAMING" or anything in there....
it's a gaming community, but doesn't mean EVERY bit of tech has to be gaming-related....
Oh, and for all others, www.woot.com is an AMAZING site, they're one of the original Deal of the Day sites, and can have some pretty sweet stuff...check out todays (the 28th's) item.
