    Vista getting dumped by Microsoft?

So, I was going to post this in my pc topic, (http://www.texasteamplayers.com/index.php?topic=46496.0)

....but I thought it deserved it's own.

I was talking to a friend earlier tonight on Steam, and I told him my new pc will have Vista Home Premium 64 bit...and he tells me that he heard on the radio on a business report that Microsoft is dumping Vista. He (my friend) even compared Vista to Windows ME...which if you've ever had the misfortune of using ME, is BAD.

I have searched, and found no official announcement...except this:
    http://www.switched.com/2009/01/08/i...dumping-vista/
..which really doesn't come out and say anything.

I've known this guy for years (since 2002) and I don't think he would BS me, so if he says he heard it...he probably did.

    So, what are your opinions?

Have any of you had any problems running Vista Home Premium 64 bit? (especially in regards to Steam)

I'm just a bit concerned, this is my first PC in six years and I've spent a considerable amount of money on it. I just don't want to find out six months down the line, that I've purchased an OS that is in the same pile as Windows ME. I mean, Vista isn't even two years old yet. It really doesn't make much sense that MS would can it this soon.

MS will stop selling XP soon. Odds are since they have not even released Windows 7 yet that Vista will be around for a bit longer.

Microsoft as we speak is developing SP2 for Vista(Paired with DX11) to be released Feb 4. It wont be dumped by Microsoft for a very long time.

I highly doubt Vista will be dumped anytime soon. MS just released the beta for windows 7,wich they say they hope to release near the end of the summer(09). As with all new OS's,I would not even think of getting it until at least SP1. Sure, there will be people falling all over themselves claiming that the new OS is the greatest product ever released, but a new OS has NEVER been put out that didn't have problems,so add a year to their release date, and you may have something worth purchasing.

As for your concerns about Vista,I hear you.I was worried about all the horror stories I heard too. I built a new rig,and got Ultimate 64 just after they released SP1,and have had zero problems. It runs as smooth as silk, and has some great features.Looks great too. All of my games(BF2,2142,CoDW@W,CS:S,TF2) installed and play perfectly, and so does Steam. Drivers were not an issue either.

I have no regrets about getting Vista 64. Besides,in the off chance you do have problems with it(which I HIGHLY doubt),here is a great rescource to help with ANY tech issues you might have. http://www.texasteamplayers.com/index.php?board=66.0

Re: Vista getting dumped by Microsoft?

Speaking for the company I work for, we plan on deploying Vista starting this year. We've spent 18 months on our development & deployment plans. There's no way for us to easily make the switch to Windows 7 at this point. When you're dealing with the logistics of deploying a new OS to 20,000+ hosts at dozens of offices scattered across the US, I'm sure other companies are facing similar situations. As others have stated, Microsoft's latest 'drop dead' date for XP sales is Jan 31 and Windows 7 won't be out until at least July... maybe longer. That being said, sure whenever Windows 7 is released, they'll focus their marketing efforts towards it and consumer PCs will all come loaded with it, but corporations will still be able to get Vista.

It really isn't a bad OS. Microsoft and its partners did a very poor job with the launch, but overall it's a pretty solid operating system. I have very few complaints about it (now...)

Exactly, something alot of people fail to understand. No matter what OS it is.

Re: Vista getting dumped by Microsoft?

Officially MS hasn't said anything. However, it is pretty widely known that Vista is more of a stepping stool leading to the release of Windows 7. That isn't a bad thing though.

It is in the same boat as ME was in that it is an intermediate OS that probably won't have longevity, however I believe MS learned from their mistake with ME. Although Vista is just the "in between" OS really, it is still a stable and solid OS. Most of the bad hype is from people who just never tried it and heard bad things for dumb asses who didn't know better or from when Vista was just released and there were some problems.

Vista is coming out with SP2 as well so that should help if there are still problems, but it really won't have the lifespan as some other OSes especially if Windows 7 launches in July like they are estimating. I've heard reports though that it will be probably later like in Sept, but the point is, they want Windows 7 out some time this year. It should be much more polished than Vista, however as with ANYTHING new, there will be problems that will take some time to fix and an adjustment period.

Vista will do you good for what you need it to do for so don't worry about it, especially if you already have it purchased.

    Dumping?
    No

Releasing a new OS sometime soon?
    Of Course.

If you always wait to get the very latest rumored technology products, you will never actually get anything.

Windows 7 is just now in public beta. It will be a while before it is ready for prime time.
We are just now testing Vista in our enterprise at work. Vista is not going away anytime soon.
BTW, Vista has some nice features in the Enterprise for all you IT folks out there. There are some tricky things and some software incompatibilities we are having to work out, but I think in the end, it will be well worth it.

Re: Vista getting dumped by Microsoft?

I would believe the argument that Vista is the new WinME, except that it's nowhere near as buggy as ME was. No offense, but the worst problems Vista had were in two big areas: over-the-top media slander and piss-poor driver support from the 3rd party vendors. I've been using Vista for a long time now, at work and at home and on my laptop (and yes, before SP1!) without any real problems that couldn't be fixed with relative ease or a driver update. Seriously, the worst problems I have had involved me making the idiot mistake of using a Creative Labs sound card (Audigy4) in Vista; Creative refused to write ANY drivers for their shit in abundance until nearly a half year ago.

However, I'm so used to people getting bent out of shape at the mere mention of Vista that I rarely even bother trying to defend it. :P
