So I just installed Ubuntu on my laptop. Pretty nice so far.
I got it because I am taking a Unix/Linux class and initially we were going to just learn on OpenSUSE, but the newest version we got and were told we should use (since that is what the book is) didn't have all the necessary files needed to run specific, important commands.
For example, we can't even add or create users, change permissions or anything. The commands weren't even there.
Anyways, just trying it out right now and getting all the updates. So far so good.
The only thing is, it didn't ask me to set up a root password. I'm a little confused because I am able to update using my normal login password (which I was told before is the same as root by default) but when I go into the command line to try to add a user or change to a super user, the password doesn't work.
Anyone have any helpful hints or experiences for someone new to Ubuntu/Linux in general?

Re: Ubuntu
I installed Ubuntu on my laptop. Apparently it does not always play well with the power settings of laptops. If I put it in standby and bring it out the CPU fan will not turn on anymore. I also had it come back on after it was in my backpack. I went to get it out after I got home from work and the whole laptop was burning up. It didn't turn on at first and I almost cried. (It was a gift from the wife at Christmas) Right now I only run Vista and it works.

I'll be sure to keep that in mind in case I have any problems messing around with stuff. We've been having problems to say the least on campus so we haven't gotten into anything really that much yet. Good to know though there are people here who can help if I need it.
