Stupid question: IDE vs. SATA DVD

Do SATA DVDs read faster the IDE ones? I have a IDE in my main system at home and was wondering.

No. DVD read times do not even max out IDE bandwith.

Good, that's less money I have to spend on completing this build. Unless I decide to go to Bluray but I think I'm going to wait a little longer on that.

Thought about this after I posted... would I want to go SATA anyway so I can disable the IDE stuff so they don't take up IRQs?

Eh, if you want. Really the only advantages to using SATA DVD drivers are them being future proof, and SATA cables dont have as much of an impact on air flow as IDE cables. SATA Cables are also typically easier to work with.

I don't believe there is such a thing as a stupid question.

Cabling alone is reason to get Sata vs ide, they're right in those regards it's much easier to deal with and the cost of say a sata drive is really almost identical to ide (which are getting harder to find anyway) my mobo for example only has sata connections anyway and the newer eq is trending that way

while you will not get faster READ/WRITE rates as that is determined by your actual optical drive, you will get higher transmit/receive speeds going to and from the optical drive. So your buffer rates and such will see better throughput and you'll have more headroom for bursts of data to and from the drive.

I would second that as well. SATA is the current standard. IDE slots on motherboards are being phased out. Many usually only have 1 IDE channel, so if you are running more than 1 ROM, or HD's and ROM's at the same time....you only have the master and slave channel to work with.

SATA. There should be no price difference.

I use this model in all my builds, and in my box. Quiet. Cheap. Easy to use.

and it's a lightscribe, meaning you can turn the disc over and burn images/title/text onto the face (of course, you have to use lightscribe disks, but they can be purchased or ordered anywhere).

Re: Stupid question: IDE vs. SATA DVD

I was asking more for if I should replace the one I have now or purchase a new SATA one. Since there is no performance increase, I'll just stick with what I have until I must replace it in a year or 2 when I do another round of upgrades.
