Memory question
Back in the day, I got 4 GB of memory for my new machine. I was running Vista 64 and it made sense.
I reverted back to XP, and I am familiar with the limitations of a 32bit OS and Ram. It recognizes 3.5GB of RAM and I guess the other .5 is taken by my video card.
I was getting errors on 1 DIMM and trashed it leaving my machine with 3GB of memory. Today I bought similar memory, except for the timing.
My motherboard layout is now as follows. (Forgive me if my nominclature isn't correct here)
Pair A (Slots 0 and 1) are now running 1 GB DIMMS = Corsair XMS2 1.90V ver 2.7 800MHZ - timing 5-5-5-16
Pair B (Slots 2 and 3) are now running older 1 GB DIMMS = Corsair XM2 2.10V ver 2.1 800MHZ - timing 4-4-4-12
As I understood it, the memory only runs at 800MHZ (dual channel) when the two slots are paired properly. Otherwise the speed is only 400mhz, leaving my 3rd DIMM running at 400mhz.
The voltage and timing of Pair B (2 and 3) are different than Pair A. Anyone forsee any problems with this? The PC boots no problem, and I dont see any immediate issues with it.
Also, is my shade tree knowledge of memory completely wrong?
