    New Build

I migrated this from the 2142 forum....

I was wanting to build an i7 machine with the 920 and slightly overclock it to the 940 speeds but in this link above it shows the E8600 smoking the low end i7. WTF?? What is the way to go here? The fastest core 2 duo (E8600) or the i7? I personally wanted to get the i7 for the triple channel ram and the removing of the FSB. The difference in price between the E8600 and the i7 920 is ten dollars at Newegg.
The only thing I didnt like about the i7 setup right now is the MoBo's. Complete shit for layout on these 200+ dollars boards. Now I'm finding that the E8600's are still keeping up. What are some other opinions out there?

    Re: New Build

No way....never. No dual core cpu will beat the i7 920. Not gonna happen. Never will happen. The i7 chips have been deemed the best cpu's to ever be released.

Go big, build an i7 rig, deal with the crappy layout (idk what mobo youre looking at, not all are laid out poorly).

Every i7 rig I have put my hands on has been beyond impressive. I mean REALLY REALLY sweet shit going on here.

    Re: New Build

And that's what I thought. With the i7 comes the return of hyper threading too. A lot of greatness is coming out of these chips and the boards have the potential of using 24 gigs or ram meaning they are ready for ram that hasn't even been released yet.

    What I'm looking at.......
    i7 920
    ATI 4890
    750 PSU
    6 gig DDR3 1800
    Rampage II

I was alos looking at some SSD drives but hear they are still very new and still a little un-user friendly. I dunno how true that is but I think I'll wait and run my Seagate 7200's in RAID 0 for the mean time.

OMG man YES....that is a great build right there. The rampage II KILLS!!!!! Those 4890's are smokin hot too man. Definitely definitely do it.'

Now you just gotta wait until someone else pops in here and tells you to buy something else, or change out this with that..

Go with your gut instinct, which to me, appears to be a good one.

P.S. Get Corsair, Patriot, OCZ ram, nothing else....i recommend corsair above all, out of the last 8 years ive been using corsair brand ram, ive had nothing but the best imaginable results.

And as for the SSD's...uhhhhh, they work just fine. The rig my buddy built has 2 80gb Smasungs and that fucker FLIES!!! But running your 72's in RAID 0 will definitely suffice until you wait to go to SSD land.

(better post pics once you build this bad boy)

    Re: New Build

Yup, OCZ Reaper..... FTW!!! I was going to double the ram and go with 12 gigs but shit, I doubt I will get to 50% usage with the 6 gigs and the i7.

I have always been an Nvidia fan but me thinks this 4890 is going to make me feel all warm and cozy on the inside.

The Rampage is overkill and frankly a waste of money. Get the Asus P6T V2 and us the extra the rest to get a better vid card. with that cpu you should get a Geforce GTX285.

Are you planning on swithcing to Windows 7 or are you running Vista. If so I would go ahead and get the 12 gigs its what and extra $150-$200. Over all you look like you will have a sweat setup.

Wait, so the GTX285 trumps the 4890? I was reading somewhere that it was the other way around....
The 4890 also has DDR5 which the GTX285 is DDR3... is there any advantages to this?

Vesty, from the reviews that I've seen on these, they appear to swap the top spot in the benches depending on the application being tested. The only place that the faster memory latency between the GDDR3 vs GDDR5 also happens to be around the same place in the benches that multi-card setups tend to make a slight difference. And that is at resolutions higher that 1900x"X" (e.g. 2560 and above) and those resolutions are generally only native to monitors larger that 26" or so.
