    DVD Drive not recognizing disk

I've got a Netflix subscription and I wanted to watch a movie tonight. I put it into my laptop and it doesn't even register that there is a disk in the drive. I click on the drive in my computer and it ejects the disk and tells me to load a disk into the drive.

What would be causing this? I tried with two of my three DVDs from Netflix. The third worked but I'd still like to see the other two.

Check the region code on the two that won't read. Make sure they are Region 1.

Read the fine print on the disc itself. It should say somewhere on there "Region 1" or "NTSC".

Region 1 is the DVD decoding region that encompass all of North America. If the discs are some other region (for whatever messed up reason) then your DVD drive that is set to region 1 won't be able to decode them.

THere are ways of changing the region coding on your DVD drive, but lets not go into that until we know for sure that the DVDs aren't region 1. I can't quite imaging that Netflix would screw up so badly that they would send the entirely wrong region discs.... it's quite a longshot theory.

easy fix, go download VLC media player. It is free and will play any regions DVD. I used it for 6 weeks while I was in Austria. Their DVDs are cheap but they are not the same region as the US>

no indication on the disks as to what region they are.

phyrelight, I already am an avid user of VLC. My problem is not that the player but the fact that my laptop doesn't even show there is a disk in the drive.

update your chipset and see if there is a firmware update for your dvd drive, typically if it stops detecting it's a driver issue or the drive is dying.

Chipset? chipset is your Mother boards drivers to control the DVD and other peripherals. If that is up to date then it sounds like you need to order a new DVD. I guess I should point out the obvious, did you make sure the cables are connected inside the case and that it's turned on properly in the bios. Does it show up at all in the device manager?

it recognizes 1 of 3 so I assume the connections inside my laptop are good. I just installed this os within the month so I'd say chipset is ok.
