i7 fan

OK,

I have the new computer up and running...

i7 920
6GB Patriot triple channel DDR3
Gigabyte X58 MB
Rosewill 500 Watt PS
EGA 8800 GT 512

It seems as if the stock Intel CPU fan is LOUD! Even at low speeds. It does keep the CPU at around 60C. Is there a quiter aftermarket fan that anyone has had a good experience? Please no LIQUIDCOOL comments as I am not looking to overclock it to the moon and don't want to spend $200.

I play 100% TF2 and am running 150 FPS at full load adn 300 FPS at the high. I am not going to drop another $199 on a 260 until I start playing something that I need it for.

But thank you...big upgrade from the AMD X2 3800 I was running with 2 MB ram.

I have an i7 as well.

I originally did the same thing as you, figured I would tough it out with the stock fan. lol that only lasted 2 months before I broke down and bought this:

It dropped my core temperatures about 10C, the fan is super quiet and its recommended by alot of sites for its price/performance ratio. I did alot of research and concluded this would be the perfect heatsink to do a decent job for a fair price, since I'm not the super hardcore overclocking type.

The Dark Knight is a good bargain, and probably in the top 10 i7 coolers.

But the top 2 are the Thermalright Ultra Extreme and the Prolimatech Megahalems.

The Megahalems can be had for $60, I got mine from Jab-tech.com. But you'll need to provide your own 120mm fan(s) for it. I use the Coolermaster R4... from about 5 fans I tested, it was the best in terms of airflow/noise ratio. And it looks sweet too.

I got this and I don't care what the critics say. It is super quiet, comes with its own thermal paste which is better than arctic silver, and it keeps my CPU at 35C to 40C...... under load it may get to 50c or 55c and that's with anything I do.

I had scanners running (4 of them) two games (2142 while on server and Supreme commander, which is high CPU usage) Firefox with several windows open, x-fire, steam, MSN messenger, Music playing, 2 downloads, all going while watching temps.

Even OC'd to 4.0 I still ran under 60c with more than 50% CPU usage.

It does cost a little more but well worth the investment.

Oh..... you need a BIG ass case for this fan also. I got a full tower and it just fit perfectly.

Umm, the critics love that unit. It's a good one too. The fans are ugly but they are the quietest in the biz. I had one briefly.

And yeh, a lot of the ones mentioned in this thread require a big case.
